The story overall was good, it's just fucking weird that the director inserted his pedo love story into the film

You could have the same story but have it be socially acceptable if Leon was a father figure whose back story was that his daughter was murdered because he messed up back in Italy. That way he's disturbed by Natalie Portman because she resembles his daughter. He doesn't want to be a father figure again because it brings back memories of his daughter's dead body. Natalie gets him to open up and reveal what happened to his family, and instead of the pervy bedroom scene or I love you moment you can insert a wholesome father daughter scene. Instead of drinking at a fancy restaurant, they get ice cream. You get the idea.
The story beats remain the same. He takes her under his wing and he saves her in the end. Sure it's a trope but it's a lot better than a French pedo story.

It gets weirder and weirder as time goes on. It's blatantly, LITERALLY about a middle aged man who falls in love with a child and wants to marry and fuck her. It's so insane to watch that plot in 2025.
