Avatar and Halo are both basically the same setting from Aliens (1986), or heavily influenced by it, just going and seeing different parts of the galaxy.
It's a somewhat generic starting point but a broad and flexible one and can do compelling things depending on where it explores

I never really got it either. Avatar is honestly such a weird thing to me. Like, the movie was the biggest thing when it came out and it's instantly recognizable to most people. But there is no real enthusiasm for whatever it is it has built (beyond navi fetish communities). Despite it being the highest grossing movie of all time and being known by almost everyone I have a hard time calling it iconic. Like everyone knows what it is but nobody actually cares to discuss anything about it.
I remember very little excitement for the sequel and yet it still made almost 2 billion somehow.
