Why is modern sound mixing so fucking bad? I sympathize with zoomers needing subtitles to watch movies nowadays.

Go watch any film from the 80s or 90s and the dialogue track is crisp and clear

It's because the ones mixing the sound don't care. As for older films, you need a sound bad minimum or you won't hear jack on the highs or lows.
By the way, the Blu-ray for Disney's Fantasia is horrid. The sound is just tinny garbage and can't be mixed out or fixed in any way. Put on a Laserdisc rip and voila, it was perfect luxurious sound.

It's because they mix for theater sound systems and are too cheap to make a regular stereo mix for normal people.

They're getting better. Got an LG that has sound that can handle most films, got a soundbar for the rest. I can't stress enough how good some soundbars can be. Mine seems to simulate back end channels quite nicely. Audiophiles btfo once again.

The reason why nolan films are badly mixed is because he shot that shit with imax camera. Imax camera sounds like a fucking jet engine next to your ear, actors can barely talk to each other because of that and people on set cant listen to whatever the thing that other people said when they powered up that piece of shit camera to shot some establish or scene or something

every home release should come with a dedicated stereo track so i don't have to fuck around with downmixing myself.
i have decent headphones. i should be able to hear dialogue.

It's because he has no confidence in his dialogue.
