TBF I didn't care for it all that much when it came out in 1980 and I was 15. I definitely didn't like the musical numbers and didn't get the over-the-top scenes like all the cop cars crashing (Nobody would do THAT! It's stupid!) Get about 15 years on or so and I watch it on TV, WGN or something, and it's great. Later the internet adds in all the back stories which takes the movie up to an awesomeness we'll never see again.

That scene is such a time capsule for me. I grew up going to that type of mall. So many forgotten stores. It's not recognized as often as it should be but that movie had great editing - that chase scene could have been a huge mess, but they kept it clear enough to the audience and still managed to intercut the dialogue effectively.
