>What do you think of this movie?

Sublime.

The bit where Spider lets his dad get away out of a sense of duty or whatever is exactly the sort of dumbtatarded thing a kid their age would actually do, thinking they were doing the right thing. JC actually writes him as a kid, rather than as a child but somehow magically capable of the reasoning and experience of a middle aged adult as most other film makers and authors do.

and the sequel reframes this

>btw we can create a fully independent sapient avatars with no need for a pilot but let's not use that
>also avatars can interbreed with native navi but let's not use that either
>let's back up a bunch of replaceable goons, but not our most valued scientists
>let's also create extremely expensive avatars for those goons, not for actual use but just in case they die, but not for any other personnel besides the goons

Why should everyone, things cost, just like life insurance if you were to follow through with your though pattern it doesn't work. He clearly couldn't even afford spinal surgery because he literally said "they can fix your spine for the right price" in the first film so you think everyone can just jump into a giant machine and upload their memories?

Also how do you know he already hasn't? Maybe Jake will die but his brother did upload and when neytiri reaches earth in the 5th film she will fall in lvoe with his brother because of the resemblance.

The possibilities are endless, maybe open your mind and understand how sci-fi really works

Was an incredible adventure though, YOU might have seen this type of story a hundred times, YOU might be aquainted with this type of thing, but there's a whole generation or 2 under you that hasn't and is growing up with it, it's their Star Wars and it's actually magnificent in scope? He's already talking about animate series to expand the lore and things and how they got to Pandora, the first expedition, what was it like etc, this is incredible world building and people just brushing it off really shows they're closed minded to have new things

Objectively it does have everything you said, but this isn't the 80's anymore, kids don't play with toys, don't dress up to play and don't patiently wait in fervor for the next movie or comic. People in general are no more invested in cultural phenomenons and don't talk about a movie more than a week.

Bro you're lost of you don't think James Horner's score is incredible. There's several themes throughout both films that are exceptional for example the death of Home Tree which is played in both films and used here in this trailer as a main theme.

Is jake as a father not protecting his family a memorable character? What about Lo'ak the kid who makes friends with the Tulk'un

How about the main hottie Neytiri?

Grace? Quaritch? These are some of the easiest ones to remember os you're either being an echo chamber guy that just copies what youtubers like Nerdrotic tell you and can't think for yourself.

No iconic art? It's literally old school Roger Dean fantasy novel and sci-fi art come to life.

The weird birds are called Ikran and they actually everything on the planet are hexapods by design which means 6 limbs, mostly evolved from the planets size and ecology, there's a literal science behind everything, Cameron created this with a lot of thought. YOU can say you don't like it that's fine, but don't dismiss the amount of effort put into it.

I disagree that it's a memetic failure (nice use of memetic btw not sure if you were doing that to signify what Arnold Says to John connor in Terminator 2 about the T-1000 being memetic poly alloy or just coincidence), either way you're saying it's a failure but haven't actually said why?

I'll even play on hard mode take the box office away we wont even talk about that but as a fantasy sci-fi film it has done what not even Star Wars could do through 4-5 films after the original Avatar came out, why is that?

your take seems more reactionary than reasoned

>no memorable characters
Jake Sully, Neytiri, and Colonel Quaritch are all recognizably tied to the film in pop culture. they’re not deep Shakespearean archetypes, but they’re memorable evidenced by people still referencing them over a decade later

>no soundtrack
James Horner’s score was nominated for both Golden Globe and Grammy awards. It’s not as iconic as Star Wars, but 'I See You' and the tribal leitmotifs are absolutely part of the film’s identity. A billion-dollar box office doesn’t happen without a compelling emotional core and music carries that a lot of todays films dont even have it

>no iconic art
the floating Hallelujah Mountains???? just because you didn’t internalize the visuals doesn’t mean the art direction isn’t iconic it just means you might not recognize iconography unless it’s sold on merch

>Generic mechs and animals
AMP suits? banshees? and direhorses???

>Memetic failure
you're hundred percent trolling now Avatar’s box office record stood for a decade. Disney built an entire theme park land around it. Countless memes exist about "becoming Na’vi," "unobtanium," (which is a real scientific term coined in the 50's) and even just “blue people.” You can dislike the movie, but claiming it made no memetic impact is just historically false.

You’re mistaking personal indifference for cultural irrelevance. They’re not the same and the data doesn’t support your claim!

I was using memetic as in its original usage defined by Dawkins. As for your points, to clarify, I don't think Avatar is a bad film with a bad soundtrack and bad characters. But that it doesn't have the equivalent of a Darth Vader, Death Star and Imperial March. Otherwise I enjoyed both films and will watch the third.

It's a good movie but the strength and power of Avatar is James Cameron's ability to create a "realistic" alien world that feels like you're visiting when you watch. That's why it has no "cultural impact" ie my coworkers don't have avatar Funko pops and there's no Avater cartoon for me to watch.

A lot of 2 is dedicated to just living on Pandora which I think was a response to the amount of people obsessed with the world following the first movie. I don't know if those people still existed by the time Avatar 2 came out which is why a lot of people felt it was padded AF.

Avatar 2 had the onerous task of restarting the plot when 1 had a pretty conclusive end, while also setting up the next movie. I think Cameron struck a good balance and now he gets to really go wild with the 3rd movie and onward

Bringing back the bad guy from the first one and trying to give him an arc with being a Navi and the son felt tacked in and the worst part of the movie
The leader of the sea people was a chad through and through
I felt bad for the calf of the whale
Im tired of cartoonish evil villains
The rest was decent, the visual spectacle and tech imagining was as good as the first one.

Avatar 1 looked much more visually distinct, impressive, “epic”. I don’t know what happened with Anatap 2. Did they try to make the lighting more “realistic” at the cost of filmic gravitas? Something about it just seems less visually captivating, though there certainly are good shots. Also Jakesully looks way better in 1 vs 2

Top had less issues with the lighting. They really kept it more shadowed and that boosted the visuals.
While TWOT and new one has the same design choice to lit everything on sunlight, and this underlined some rough sides of CGI, and made it look more cartoony.
I personally not a fan of it but can see Jim making that choice to attract the kids who never even seen Avatar 1.
I heard gen alpha does actually kinda like Avatar on tiktok.

Loved the first Avatar. The second one was a major step down for me. The technical aspects were amazing and far surpassed the first one, but everything else was much worse imo. I was very disappointed coming out of the theater. I still consider myself an Avatar fan and am hyped for Fire and Ash but my enthusiasm is somewhat damped and not even close to what it was before The Way of Water came out.

I doubt it.
I think with Spider and Varang Quatrich is getting villain to anti-hero or at least anti-villain arc throught 2 to 4.
Also i suspect we are going to lose Jake in this one.
As far as i know, 4th movie will have time skip early on, which is interesting because what does A4 need that beginning part for if the rest of the movie will have grown up Jake's kids and Spider? I can imagine that part to be everyone's time to deal with the consequences of the third one. This means the consequences of the third one would be pretty significant.
4th movie being about Quatrich becoming what Jake was in the previous three makes sense.
Also, given that Worthington got 5 movie contract, i think he will still be the part of the plot.
All of that is just my speculation based on classic tropes, logic and rumors. Did not read the leaks though.

For some reason arrows just don't work for the first half of the movie.
Whenever I rewatch Avatar I always think it's bizarre that Sully doesn't give the Navi some new strategy to help defeat the RDA.
Just him switching sides is enough to make their tactics and arrows more viable.
