That's part of the Trickster God stuff OP, in this case the Trickster God fuses with the MC. When the villain puts on the mask he tries to do real shit and we sense it would be horrible if he got into a position of real power, but the movie stops that. The character is basically acting on his emotions in a simple cartoon character way, which is the point.

Something similar happens in Swamp Thing. The characters take a magical serum and it brings out "who they really are", good or bad.

When people call it edgy, they mainly mean the Mayhem run with the original Stanley Ipkiss which is about the only worth reading storyline in those comics as they become garbage after that. No other character is anywhere as interesting as Ipkiss and the edge is snuffed out and replaced with kiddy shit. Stanley's Big Head incarnation was the most brutal and violent. The others always cuck out at the last second due to how LE EVIL the mask is and it's just annoying. Whereas Stanley relished in killing everyone and everything.
A R-rated reboot in the vein of Falling Down with a similar protagonist lashing out at clown world would be a huge cultural phenomenon and for that reason it will never be made unless to farm outrage or humiliate the audience in a sequel like Joker.

Just make a Joker out of it and make the mask an ancient death mask from an Aztec era culture where there's an actual ritual where they bound demons to a mask and wore them and were possessed by the demon in turn. Then transplant that into the modern day where some spineless forever alone corporate slave with a shitty life finds the mask just after his life falls apart (gets fired, etc.) and he puts it on and it makes him into a GTA character in real life with all the cheats activated where he can't be killed, has superpower, superspeed, can teleport etc. but don't make him into a real life cartoon as you want this to be halfway grounded, dark and "realistic".

"I Pledge Allegiance to The Mask!" was likely an attempt to test the waters for interest. It was terrible and had shit sales so they buried it again. We'll probably get a new mini-series in another couple of years; hopefully it manages to be decent.
