He did for about 5 years in the 90s and he squandered it all with his mid-00s mainstream slop that's basically Jersey Girl, Clerks II, Zach and Miri and Cop Out.
He was another good Gen X indie director who simply couldn't take that talent and blow up the scale to do mainstream projects.
There are a lot of directors like that, you can give them 1,000,000 dollars and they'll make an intimate piece that depicts perfectly a person, place and time, you give them 50,000,000 they'll give you a polarizing piece of slop that seems like it's stuck between a snarky script and a giant concept. David Lynch is probably the GOAT of them.

Mallrats is one of my favorites and Chasing Amy and Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back are both great in their own rights. Jay and Silent Bob is an underrated meta Hollywood movie especially post-Weinstein.
