Cotton was such a huge asshole. if this was reality, Hank would probably end up a a serial killer with a hair trigger temper and a lot of insecurities. The only way that could work is if Cotton divorced his mom when Hank was a baby and he never met the guy until adulthood (which is contradicted by the show).

COtton seemingly ahs few redeeming traits and he's just full of anger and hate endlessly. I have no idea what Hank would need to do to win his approval. My guess is only a military career would satisfy him, and he sees Hank's current job and life as sissy and wimpy.

1. They found new digital ways to cut corners. I think we're reverting more and more to 60s era Hanna Barbara limited animation. The big boom in tv animation of the late 80s and 90s was to move away from that, to something more artistic, something looking a little big more cinematic. We've regressed.

I think i haaaaaaaaaate the hyper detailed backgrounds, rather than the less realistic less detailed ones of the old 90s shows. There's less dynamic angles, so they just show you one super detailed realistic background because they are not changing the camera much.

2. Sadly, streaming doesn't pay as well as cable. No one's figured out a system that pays as well, so you likely will NEVER get tv shows like this again. 22 eps, high quality, looks nice. Nope, it's cheap shit forever.

This is why old shows should be treated like gold and protected.

A lot of anime's head start in doing a lot with little is because their idea of limited animation may have started with a lot of slides and stretching pose-to-pose as much as humanly possible, but even by the 60's it was adopting a lot of blocking from live action cinema to sell drama. So great effort put into a single background painting to set a dramatic scene in say someone's living room, even if the animation was just going to be lip flaps and maybe a slide or two.

While (television one's anyway) cartoons have the hanna barbera wheelhouse (which Judge hates) of cutting corners with no subsequent art movement to try to make it more dramatic until cartoons start borrowing from American TV sitcoms in the 80's.

Ironically as digital workflows increase the amount of cuts a single animator can do in a day, a lot of the lessons of the past people learned about blocking gets tossed by the wayside, as productions end up in a feedback loop of just focusing narrowly on the animation and getting the animation out the door. Storyboards, layouts, animatics, and the like focusing on composition are lost, as jobs blend more and more into "animator" instead of specialized artists.

I just started it and I'm halfway through the first episode. It just feels off. Uncanny valley type feeling off. I'm not going to trash it for atleast a few more episodes but it really doesn't feel like the original, whereas Beavis and Butthead even when they were shown older or talking about more modern shit like MTV reality shows instead of music videos still felt like it picked up right where it left off. I hope it gets better, it just really feels bizarre at this point. Like a King of the Hill series made in another country after the success of the first one but dubbed by American voice actors. Like the foreign versions of Married With Children that a couple countries made after it came out, but dubbed in English for English speaking people.

It's OK so far, but very easy to nitpick.
The voice acting is fine, but every now and then lines sound like they've been delivered over the phone, or the delivery is totally monotone, like the actor didn't have the line's surrounding context.
The art is fine, but the facial expressions feel a bit stiffer at times, and the clipart looking beer clearly has thinner lines than everything else which is very distracting.
The script is fine, but it feels less efficient, more repetitive at times, than how it used to be.
The beer episode, for example, felt like there was a lot of downtime with the beer-making scenes where nothing was happening.
And I don't like how Dale is being written.
He used to talk big, but it was all talk, most of the time.
Feels like now he's being written like he's actually unhinged.
