What is it about the T-Rex that made it the most iconic dinosaur of all time?

It was the largest carnivore, which lead to it being used in the most film and television series and there was also a lot of almost complete skeletons of them found in the late 80s-early 90s when dinomania was really high.

What even triggered dinomania? Does someone wake up one day and go "lets make this a thing for a while generation of kids"?

Dinosaur renaissance. New discoveries lead to change in perception. Dinosaurs weren't slow moving lumbering frog retards that died for because they were too fat but fast, dynamic killers. And it wasn't the first time neither, victorians went crazy over dinosaurs too when they were first discovered.

I like this schizotheory. The real fossil record is actually tiny and most of these skeletons are just aggressive extrapolations. Field didn't even exist until the 1800's and then "randomly exploded" like some kind of scientist gold rush for fame and acclaim.

I’m old enough to have childhood picture books where the T-Rex stood upright and lumbered around to standing more parallel to the ground and being more quick and sleek that previously thought (I think Jurassic Park popularized that), to being more of a scavenger than a hunter, to having feathers, to not having feathers again, to making a sound closer to an alligator bellowing than a roar.
