America didn't want to lionize the USSR for like 50 years after the war. Still kinda the case today. The Soviets were also pretty awful war criminals themselves. Probably worse than the Germans overall. The early Call of Duty games are likely the best you'll get as far as American media goes in depicting it.

I know they were. Still doesn't excuse the Soviets terrorizing Poland or their own citizens. Also the campaign of rape and murder they committed across Germany in retaliation. According to witnesses they were raping German women between the ages of 8 to 80 and lining uop outside of churches to gang rape the nuns. Not exactly beating the "subhuman" allegations with that shit. Even if Germany's treatment of the Soviets was evil, which it was, the retribution was pretty intense.

Two weeks after Germany invaded because they didn't want German troops on their border. Before Germany attacked Poland Stalin wanted to make a treaty of defense with France and England against Germany but the Anglos and the Frogs didn't go for it, because they feared communist troops in Europe. Soviet Union was the last to sign a "non-agression pact" with Nazi Germany, after France, England, etc. had already signed one.

Both Nazis and Bolsheviks were avid propagandists. That's why this discussion is sullied. It's impossible to tell who was exaggerating more, but there is no denying the Soviets had a vested interested in hyping up the "Nazi evil" as well. Do you think they wanted Poles and Ukrainians to sympathize with them? Absolutely not, therefore: they want to kill you all. Germans said similar things about Jews and other groups.

Regardless, the Axis coalition was the most racially diverse of the war. You won't see much unique racial animus from Germans vs. the alternatives in WW2. Hitler had unique grievances with Jews/Bolsheviks due to the communist component and this was stronger than any remarkable racial hatred or goals.

I get the sense it was utilized to get the lower class Germans to go along with their plans without having to explain every minor detail to them, but racial hatred was definitely part of their ideology.
