About to watch dexter for the first time, I was debating even starting as the overall runtime of the entirety of the series is over 96 hours~. Is there anything I should just skip, seaons wise or just go straight into the latest (resurrection) without giving a fuck.

I speedran the whole series before New Blood started and at a certain point I just started skipping all the scenes about his sister's boyfriends. Then I skipped almost all of the last two seasons.

Only the first 2 season are worth watching. You can stretch to s4 or even 5 but the people who say things past 2 are good just have low standards

1-4 are kino with a slight drop in season 3. After 4 it stops being "serious" and you'll have to switch your mindset to a more "so bad its good" mentality. Dexter's a little finicky like that.

s4 and the start of season 5 is very good
you just have to be good at knowing which scenes suck and skip them

Its all downhill after season 4 with seasons 6 and 8 being by far the worst.

putting anything on the level of 8 is an insult 8 is probably one of the worst seasons of anything ever it's basically not watchable

Frankly the entire show is worth a skip

Dexter is a show that has a really good premise, and it hints on really interesting ideas, but it never reaches anywhere interesting enough to call it "Good"

It's watchable, enjoyable even, especially the first 4 seasons, but that's kinda just it

In my (unrequested) opinion, Dexter should have leaned a LOT more on the fact he's a sadistic psychopath who kills for his own pleasure. Instead the show tries really too hard to make you empathize with him and see him as a noble vigilante, especially the later seasons. Which is weird, considering there are a few times early on that the show very clearly understands he's a monster, and really leans on the fact that the viewer shouldn't empathize with him (cue the scene where Dexter murders someone in front of Doakes). Had they leaned more on Dexter being the villain then it would have been kino, but they didn't so it's 96 hours of mostly slop with hints of a good show somewhere in there

I'm struggling to finish watching season 3, I miss the goofy stuff Dex did in the first two seasons, his awkward and out of touch dialogue used to be fun but now it just sounds like bitching. I'm sure it will get funny again but that doesn't mean it's not annoying right now.

The writing is bad after s2 for example dexs motivations change from pragmatic to sabotaging the police so he can be the one to kill the antagonist for no reason. I kinda like s5 more than 4 but its still not great and the tone changes terribly especially in the climax

it's the only show that actually portrays a genuine introvert and how people view him and interact with him, you can basically ignore the serial killer part and the way he handles friendships, office relationships (with a bunch of people just hating him for no reason because he's weird) and him getting exhausted being around people (even when he likes them like with miguel) is fun to watch.
also really funny the only time mainstream tv can portray introverts is as a serial killer

I really enjoyed season 7 a lot. The whole thing with deb finding Dexter is a serial killer and that her dad thought Dexter everything is really interesting and her having to deal with the fact that she killed La Guerta and her brother is a killer. I thought season 8 has good in the first half after that it got shit.
