I would be careful using the word "friend" with Japanese people. Aside from total outcasts, it seems that many Japanese people have a completely different concept of what a friend is and have a clear separation of who their "friends" are and people whom they are "friendly" with. In America, we pretty much have an approach that "if we're cool with each other, we're friends" but that is not the case in Japan
