I travel for work as a machinery repairman. I only travel in the US but some of my coworkers go to South America. Most places in South America they are required by the company to rent their rooms at an overpriced vacation resort because staying anywhere else is too much a risk for murder/robbery.

I read on a local forum few years back a post from a guy who went to work in Peru. He said that if he stays on work late he sleeps in the company parking lot because otherwise he risks getting into a highway ambush.

Also when you take a look at their cities (most Sudamerica) they have total lack of sanitation and only bare minimum of infrastructure; power works... sometimes. They can't flush their toilets if they take a shit because they instantly clog up.

I think they'd be more dangerous than Africa but in Africa you're a more obvious target.

not positive about all of south/central america but in mexico its pretty common. there are checkpoints maned with cops along remote roads to try to protect the road and cops do daily armed caravans for people trying to drive from one city to the next.

that is you meet at a certain place in the morning and cops will be there and you just follow them all the way to the next city or whatever.

ive actually ran up on a roadblock/ambush in a city at night before but either the guys had just left or they were staying in cover waiting for cops to ambush
