the context is that American Graffiti was so cheap, they didnt have a real Director of Photography. So Haskell Wexler, who was an oscar winner friend of Lucas, went and help them with some shots and teach the camera operators how to light the movie.

That scene where Milnder and Carol spray get out of their car at the traffic lights to spray the other car with whipping cream while Johnny B. Goode is playing full volume in the background is pure cinema. Like, fucking Lucas captured what it is to be a teenager and to do stupid shit when you're a teenager in that one scene perfectly. I fucking adore it.
