I hate Pink Flamingos and Female Trouble for their edginess but admit they are very funny movies. Later Waters loses the edge and tries to compensate with tongue-in-cheek charm... the result is watchable and sometimes enjoyable but not great. Still he's pretty good.
Araki meanwhile is just dull. There's nothing there besides angst and anger. Humor is very dry, acting is always terrible. Sometimes his outdoors scenes look nice, but that's it.

Angst is fine. His films are very atmospheric and I think they're quite visually striking all the way through most of the time, not just outdoors scenes. Great soundtracks always. I hate early John Waters and don't think those films are remotely funny, Araki has some neat dark humour and such great atmosphere that I usually can't look away. Admittedly he is better with loose plotless films or comedies (Splendor, Smiley Face but also Ka-Boom which is ridiculous and edited in PowerPoint or something, it's one of the funniest films I've seen) than dramas. People hype up Mysterious Skin but it's one of his weakest films to me, that's where things get kinda bland. White Bird in Blizzard was ridiculously dumb too.
