>>213509666>an unspoken resentment in DoddAbsolutely, because Dodd is a lust for power personified. Dodd sees Freddie the entire time as a rube like all the others, easily malleable into his pawn. Freddie, who has been used like a pawn his entire life, from childhood to the military, to even his alcoholism, has just assumed that's all he's good for. It's Dodd thinking he's smarter than everyone else, who tries new, shinier methods of subjugation, awakens Freddie's independence by lifting him up. This is the conflict. Control vs. kindness. Dodd is dumbstruck and broken in the end when he realizes he's been hoisted by his own petard. He's beaten himself, and Freddie reaps the benefits.
"Then go, go to that landless latitude and good luck. If you figure a way to live without serving a master, any master, then let the rest of us know, will you? For you'd be the first in the history of the world."
Dodd hates the part of himself that loves Freddie.
