I didn't say she was scary, although the scares with her in the first half were well done. Like >>213494942 said, the point was for her to be clownish and silly, which is ultimately her greatest asset in getting people to let their guard down. She had a kino look and a kino performer. Nic Cage in Longlegs had similar potential but was undermined by how shit Longlegs was.

she's not scary in the sense that she immediately evokes terror
she's scary because of what she can do
Imagine someone who can keep you and your wife captives in your own house and torture you while they abuse your kid and there's nothing you can do about it
that's definitely a disturbing thought
she's scary the way a tsetse fly is scary. Maybe you don't scream in fright if you happen to see one but the things they can do to you are worth avoiding

it's a really well done movie that drops a bunch of hints explaining what's really going on without overcommitting to detailed explanations about the underlying mechanics that would just leave everyone unsatisfied
Someone said it's a modern day pied piper and that's a pretty good analogy
It's also worth mentioning that it's a good look at what a modern day town plagued by a witch would look like. she basically has death note powers with a few extra steps, so while the police are incompetent, it's not surprising that they couldn't catch her. she's also completely ruthless, killing, lying, manipulating, and torturing as she sees fit to survive. A great take on what a witch would be like in the real world: a lone parasite alternately feigning weakness and murdering from the shadows as circumstance demands

The thing this film gets wrong is that if 17 children disappeared in America there would be press 24/7 infesting that town, tik tokers would be dancing in front of the houses, redditors would be doxxing and claiming some random guy they saw on CCTV took the children and republicans and democrats would be engaged in a 5 day culture war where nothing gets resolved.

The fact that nobody seemed to care to investigate the children or that noone in that town was particularly interested in finding out what happened is a huge plot hole.

>Parasite references
>Red herring
Reposting my comment from the other thread
>The parasite angle was the most interesting part of the film, and I got the sense that the eyes bulging out of the sockets of the afflicted was a straight up nod to the parasitic worms that mind-control their hosts, manifest in the single-minded rage of Glady's victims. Her being essentially alien through preternatural longevity, also meant that her character exhibited a certain 'offness' like biological mimicry, the aposematic elements of the witch, the red hair, garish make up, colourful dress etc. small things that subtly alert you to a danger. I guess that could explain what the clown-caricature was supposed to symbolise in the townspeople's dreams, but again, the mere existence of the symbol implied a more sinister terror-feeding monster with a darker nature.
Anyone who's browsed /pol/ for longer than five minutes will have encountered someone trying to claim the Jews are parasitic humanoids that evolved convergently alongside humanity, but it was interesting to see that sort of idea put to film.
Honestly, I don't think this villain was particularly great. It was satisfying watching her get her comeuppance, don't get me wrong, but she felt incredibly underdeveloped and ultimately quite ineffective for all the build up.
The Giant Gun in the sky was retarded though. It just came off as contrived and ridiculous. Like something Kojima would pull.

Yeah but with the texas flood, republicans did exploit it and blamed other people. I'm glad the film doesn't deal with culture war shit but 16 kids going missing IRL would trigger at least some viral moment across the country. Also, with the texas flood the girls are dead so the "mystery" is solved and they can move on to the next thing, which is sydney sweeny i guess.

Last of Us is similar, and I think it's probably where knowledge of parasitizing fungal lifeforms and worms became ubiquitous pop-culture knowledge, but Weapons frames it so that the parasite is a conscious and malefic agent deliberately puppeteering its thralls, or 'weaponizing' them, as Brolin's character says with a wink to the screen as a giant Assault Rifle floats above him, as opposed to TLOU's naturalistic chaotic fungal zombie means of taking over hosts.

The way they introduced her character as this unsettlingly foreign presence from the very second she randomly showed up in the principals office looking like a demented old Raggedy Ann gave her a calculated, shadowy, alien demeanour. You were never in doubt from the second she appeared that she was anything other than the reason behind the film's events. The scenes with her performing rituals/seances, and the foreshadowing of the clownish nightmare incarnation of herself in people's dreams, made it seem like Glady's abilities weren't just marionetting people, and that there was a uniquely inhuman arcane alchemical/ritual basis for her magic that drew from something ancient and mythologised in omen by modern civilisation.
Having a kid be able to replicate that from what seemed like mostly intuition and imitation negated the supernatural threat. It felt like a last minute cop-out, which was something I also felt from her last-minute change of plans when things started going remotely awry. Having her character foiled so effortlessly like a goofy scooby doo villain on the virtue of a kid finally being brave enough to stand up detracted from the killer mystery set up. Post-watch, the whole thing just feels like a second-rate Stephen King adaptation. Or a particularly good goosebumps episode.

Well, we live in a materialistic world. Her power was likely not truly her own, if she could be undone like that. We don’t know where she acquired her plant, or why she waited until she had cancer to go and try to sustain herself. She could have sold her soul to some demon or alien on her deathbed for all we know.

>on the virtue of a kid finally being brave enough to stand up detracted from the killer mystery set up.
if A24 had made the movie she would have killed everyone and taken the kid and presumably you could then call the movie "brave" but it would be a shitty depressing ending and sometimes it's ok to give the audience what they want
it was very cathartic to see her get hoisted on her own petard in the end. when the kid took her wig, I thought he was going to try to control her instead but he was looking for loose hairs in there.
that is the unbelievable part. that a kid would be so determined and resourceful, but if somehow a kid could actually do something like that, it would have caught her off guard as well, which is what happened
when my daughter was 9 I bought a gun and I had a safe in the house so that she wouldn't be able to get at it and hurt herself or others
a few weeks earlier, she had cracked my computer password by quietly watching me enter it and writing down one character at a time over several days
one day I opened my safe and there was a stick figure drawing of her and me together hugging inside it on top of my gun
For a crazy second I thought she had figured out a way to crack the safe like she had my password and I felt panic welling up in me. What had actually happened was more simple: she just slid the drawing in through the cracks. God knows what possessed her to do that, but she put the wind in me.
Anyway, point is, kids can surprise you.

Cool movie, but I don't get how she is related to the family she took hostage since the movie made it obvious she is a centuries old witch (see the tubercolosis bit with the principal)

>Cool movie, but I don't get how she is related to the family she took hostage
the point is, she's not
if you're a centuries old witch, you probably don't have any connections to the world so she probably used her mind control magic to insert herself into the family at some point
take over some elderly family member you met at bingo and have them introduce you as an aunt or whatever and then insinuate yourself into some other family member's home and mind control them and that's how you burrow in. like a parasite.
They hinted at this btw with everyone being hazy at her actual relationship to the family
sometimes she was mentioned as alex's aunt (mother's sister) but at other times she was introduced as his great aunt (grandmother's sister)
the consumption reference was clever because it immediately dated her and made her feel foreign

barbarian and bring her back were both similar movies but the storytelling was better here and the ending more satisfying
hereditary is another close relative to weapons, and while it is a really good movie, it has the bad ending, which some might prefer and others might not

"huh? you liked the witch getting killed? do you like teletubies too? huh? HUH?"
chill out, dude. yeah. it was a satisfying ending to see the witch underestimate the kids determination and pay with her life.
you have other movies that show the other outcome if you like. hereditary, for instance.
not everything has to be le subverted expectations ebin edgy grimdark ending and it doesn't make you a kid if you enjoy something more cathartic
the witch is built up to be truly evil and seeing her die was a satisfying ending to a well made movie

he couldn't do witchcraft though
you can imagine witchcraft as being a heavily front-loaded practice where doing the hair wrapping and branch snapping is relatively easy, but how do you make that weird thorn tree in the first place
that's probably where the skill actually lies
it's like wondering how a kid can send a text message even though they didn't master electrical engineering. Alex saw how she used the tools and imitated her.
