The dancing looks cool, but the dialogue seems lame

Have you ever taken the time to watch the original "42nd Street" (1933)?

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0024034/

It is well worth at least a few watches for several reasons, including:
> It was the first big Busby Berkeley (choreographer) film; starting a spectacular career
> in the early era of film, it single-handedly saved the movie musical
> It started what became a clichรฉ; the star is injured and the understudy has to go on instead
> The musical numbers are other-worldly in terms of how far ahead they were; including the mature nature of the scenes, plot, and even the dance routines.

It snuck through a year before the Hayes Code started to be enforced

Back on this topic >>213510598, that was one of the advantages of Berkeley films; "dance" was a loose term. His style with mostly starting with 200 women, and putting them (and moving them) in strange geometric patterns. Here's something from another film:

As for adult themes, take this scene from Golddiggers of 1933
> men are all at the park with their girls
> girls are tired of them all feeling them up, so they take the opportunity to change to metal dresses
> a young Billy Barty playing a pervy baby gives the main character a can opener so he can get to his girl

There was an interesting clip from "That's Entertainment III" (1994), which shows him performing the same dance routine a few months apart, after they decided to change his costume. It's a good example of showing how much work goes into making it look easy on film

I don't actually keep track, but this film would have to be among the top 5 films I've seen the most number of times. Easily 50 times for this flick, including a half dozen times in a theater on the big screen. Fantastic stuff.

42nd Street is so overrated. It has some good moments but Warner Baxter is an insufferable leading man. Footlight Parade is my much preferred WB pre-code musical, or Gold Diggers of 1933.

Werner Herzog on the blackface shadow dance sequence:
>It's the purest, most total movie sequence I've ever seen in my life. It's very strange because Fred Astaire has the most stupid face on screen and his movies have the most insipid stories. But everything ever filmed with him has some sort of greatness. And the purest of the pure, the finest of the fine for me is this sequence from Swing Time. It's cinema, nothing else.
I can't say anything about Fred Astaire that this kraut hasn't said better.

I think Swing Time has better songs, but I like the totality of Top Hat more overall. I think it's funnier and better paced.

Gold Diggers of 1933 is my favorite of those, although Footlight Parade benefits highly from having James Cagney.

Agreed. Swing Time is unique among Fred and Ginger films because you can just watch their song and dance scenes and get the whole story.

Some hacks made a whole career out of promoting their dance was the epitome of sex or adult relationship. Unconvinced.

That's a fun one that gives the supporting characters some good moments. As much as I like The Continental, it does go on a bit too long. Btw that's Ginger's actual car she drives in the movie (pic). A Duesenberg if I'm not mistaken.

Childhood is thinking the Broadway Melody kills the pace of the movie and lasts way too long.
Adulthood is realizing it's the best part of the movie.

Yeah it's funny that it really doesn't need to be in the movie at all (it doesn't advance the plot, unlike Beautiful Girls though in full disclosure that scene could have been cut to just the end of the song). But Broadway Melody is just so awesome. Cyd Charisse was a force of nature on the dance floor.

Underrated Fred and Ginger: Roberta. They have supporting roles but their banter and musical numbers are the whole reason for the movie. Btw this is also the first appearance of Smoke Gets in Your Eyes.
