Overstuffed, bad writing (dialogue in particular), bad CGI, AWFUL cinematography, and hit or miss James Gunn jokes. The worst part for me though was it completely failed to create a believable world, Lex Luthor would pull universe altering technology out of his ass for some dumb gag and it wouldn't be addressed again.

When the very best possible version of the character was done 45 years ago, there's no good way to "update" it. You have three choices:
Make it darker - doesn't fit the character's positive tone (Snyder)
Make it goofier - all gravitas is lost and it feels cheap (Gunn)
Make it the same - everyone complains it's just copying the old one (Superman Returns
Honestly, the best option would have been if Superman Returns hadn't gone full retard with the weird suit, the kid and the kryptonian tech real estate scheme. Some of its scenes are among the best Superman scenes ever done (plane rescue, bullet to the eyeball, saving them from the ship)

No, you're wrong and I'm more honest about this than others who think there's a one "accurate portrayal" of Superman. Normalfags have a perception of Superman despite not really getting into actual Superman content and then projecting that into what they want him to be portrayed as. When people say, "This is so Superman", it doesn't really mean anything concrete. I could as easily say this film fits more a Shazam! film and nobody would bat an eye.

No there isn't. Please really think deep and hard on what YOU think an objectively accurate portrayal of Superman is. You'll quickly realize that it's a mishmash and caricature of alot of Superman stories and runs mostly influenced by people TALKING ABOUT Superman. Do you think Superman in Hitman is more "accurate" to Superman? The whole idea of "Superman shouldn't do X or be Y" is superfluous because Superman has been and done everything.

People, especially normalfags, project REALLY REALLY hard onto Superman. Sometimes he's a butt of a joke, sometimes he's a government stooge, sometimes he's a writer's punching bag and a write in for things he hates, sometimes he doesn't even want to be Superman. ALL OF THESE are Superman.
>but he's an allegory of Moses rather than Christian allegory!
Initially yes but he's been depicted more and more in a Christian sense than Jew sense.
>but he's an allegory for illegal immigrants!
Patently false, he's a foundling and doesn't actively spite the American people and instead devotes his day and life into helping his nation and to an extent the entire world.

This is not to say there are stories that delve more into him being an illegal immigrant and more Jewish version of him.

Having pretty much all of pre-2011 Superman comic possible i'd say that the most 'comic accurate' Superman is actually Disney's Goofy, and the version of Goofy from those animated shorts where it was about him being a random dude going about his work or his personal life that was all about poking fun on a working man/married man's life.

Basically his most famous comics was about him being a working man or trying to date but everything would be made super or weird, and he was pretty much a huge exasperated asshole using his superpowers as some sort of cheat code to escape the insanity that was his life.
Something that stopped at the early 70s and is completely different from any movie or cartoon ever made about the character.

What I'm saying is that, to the overwhelming majority of people Reeve's Superman is the one and only definitive Superman. There is no other viable version to them, so "accurate portrayal" is, to the masses, the very same thing. Almost everything discussed in here, and references to costumes and even the Snyder films, is only relevant to sliver of people. Ask 100 people to describe Superman and 99 of them will probably be picturing Reeve as they do it and naming qualities of the character from Superman I & II

Then LITERALLY say that. Just say it's cribbing from Reeves' Superman or an overcorrection of Snyder's Superman. Just don't say it's the "most accurate portrayal of Superman in a live action film" because that's giving this film undue credit for something that it didn't do.

I watched Man of Steel this week, it's such a strange movie. The 1st 30 minutes, I think are about as great as they could be. Then the plot just kind of gets pear shaped and so many weird jarring leaps are made. I got taken out of it when Zod brings Lois on the ship and she just so happens to have the Jor-El AI key to put into the ship. It felt like it needed a lot more time, I can imagine Snyder probably has some 5 hour cut of it somewhere. It was not as good as I was hoping I remembered it to be but I think much better than the current movie which is just chaotic nonsense and saying that in comparison to a Snyder movie is really saying something.

The idea in MoS was that Clark and Lois, for a magical reason, always found one another, no matter what, specially in a moment of danger or crisis, as some weird metaphor about sex havers just not being able to help themselves because they want to fuck really, REALLY bad.
This in juxtaposition to Zod and his crew of incels that are constantly splitting and doing different things apart, which is why they end up losing.

It's just a weird metaphor being pushed by the movie and not really working.

The funny thing is that even in comics you've writers disagreeing about what Superman is all about.

Take Kingdom Come, which is pretty famous and one of DC's evergreen comic books.
Alex Ross and Mark Waid stopped talking to each other after making that comic. They fucking hate each other. Why? They disagreed about how to portray Superman.
Ross thought that Superman, the real Superman, is Clark Kent, and thus should be not only human in that he's good and such, but also flawed and prone to making mistakes. Waid, meanwhile, thought that Superman, the real Superman, is Kal, and should always be perfect because everything about him should be super. He's human, yes, but superhuman. He's always super good. He can't ever be wrong. So they fought, and fought, and stopped talking over it.

That's hyperbolic and you know it. The Christian imagery in MoS wasn't nearly as bad as people think it is they just like to hone in on that because it was the popular thing to hate at the time.

I don't mind movies not being 1-to-1 with their comic counterparts. I really liked the world-building in MoS actually. Like the reason Kryptonians are powerful is because they had to evolve on a hellish nightmare planet. I thought that was kinda cool and it's even kinda making it's way into comics with Absolute Superman (it's not quite the same thing but its close-ish).

The funny thing is that later Mark Waid wrote his own sequel to Kingdom Come, and later Alex Ross wrote his own sequel as well, and both sequels are basically totally different.

This is a thing that basically started with John Byrne's 80 reboot, when Byrne ended the whole "Kal" thing, but making so that Superman doesn't have things like 'super memory' or 'super intelligence' and so grew up mostly as Clark Kent. Thus Clark being who he is, and Superman just what he does.
Which goes against with how Superman used to be before, where Superman had 'super memory' and 'super intelligence' and thus could remember his infancy back in Krypton under the care of his biological parents. So Superman was mostly Kal and would use to say things like "Great Rao" and such. The Kents were seen just like the kindly couple that took care of him for a time.

So for the longest time you had writers like Waid that just hated the change brought by Byrne, and wanted everything to go back to how it was where Superman was perfect, single, and mostly lived as some super alien capable of anything. He used to be even against Superman and Lois being a thing, because Superman being with a human female was wrong.

Everything took me out. Everything. Every single line was crafted to be an ironic, insincere joke. It was complete shit and Gunn clearly does not like Superman or care about Superman. Half of the movie is the Justice Gang being assholes, that's the only type of movie he knows how to make.

The Kryptonians are mostly powerful because they bred themselves that way. They have an ultra-eugenics program that ensures that you are born to be drawn towards a certain role in Kryptonian society. Without the film explicitly stating it, Kryptonians sort of solved both the work and birth crises. Superman being infused by the literal blueprint of every Kryptonian is what also makes him above every Kryptonite ever in terms of everything.

Iโ€™m in that camp because Iโ€™m bored of it and itโ€™s gone too far. Making Superman some symbol has made the character boring and unrelatable. Chris Reeveโ€™s Superman wasnโ€™t like that. He was goofy and had a lot charisma and made mistakes. He wasnโ€™t some stoic borefest

Oh I know. Zod was literally faster at adapting than Clark and probably would have won their fight if it went on much longer.
But I just thought the supplemental material was kinda neat.
Like in MoS Krypton is tidally locked to Rao, so there's no magnetic field protecting the Kryptonians from all the solar radiation. [This is the explanation for why Kryptonians have super resistances to heat and cold and radiation.]
Also the planet is super dense and has immense gravity. [Obviously leades to super strength.]
And the atmosphere is so caustic and thick with particulates that you can't see through it and it burns your skins. [And that explains why they full electromagnetic vision and super senses.]

I do find it odd that the JL cartoon made it seem like Apokolips is just some random planet like any other and not an actual realm that exists outside the multiverses that can only be accessed via boom tubing (you cannot literally fly to New Genesis or Apokolips). I think even Snyder made that misconception.

One of the cool things that did in MoS is that they explore the different explanations given to Superman powers over the decades.
Originally there wasn't any of this sun thing, where the sun rays empower his cells giving him his superpowers. Originally the only explanation given was that the planet he came from had a denser atmosphere, and so because of that he was like an ant. He was strong and could just high. He didn't have any of the super senses or any of that. He couldn't even fly.
Then during the 50s, thanks to the cartoon and the radio show, they come up with the sun thing, and now he could fly, he had heat vision, and so on.

So in MoS they show the kryptonian crew all just being super strong, super fast, and being able to jump high. Because they're shielding their bodies with that armor, which is shielding them from the sun's rays. So they're pretty operating under the golden age explanation.
Then the moment their armors break and they're flooded by the sun's rays, that's when they start to develop their super-senses and be able to fly. Now you've the classic explanation.
This is all done visually. I thought it was neat.

Gunnโ€™s Superman was the most human version of Superman weโ€™ve seen. Basically the point of the movie is him rejecting his alien heritage for his midwest parents who raised him to be a good person. He is dearly flawed and his interview with Lois shows this when he admits putting a dictator on a cactus

Technically if we're discussing flaws being correlated to one's humanity, Snyder's would top out. Cavill's Superman is even apprehensive and anxious about being "a Superman", along with his parents agreeing that he doesn't even have to be a Superman if he does not want to or if he's not ready yet. THAT is a very unique and interesting take on Superman, even compared to the comics. Some might say, "Oh Clark doesn't need to doubt about being Superman, he doesn't need a tragedy to help others!" which is also true but Snyder's rendition of Clark being a wanderer helping people out his own way a la incognito is really fresh and introspective of the character.

Visually Man of Steel was a tour de force. Which is why you can rewatch it a hundred times and never get bored of it. Because a plot might be interesting one or two times, but amazing visuals are never ceases to be inspiring.

Meanwhile this new brand of Gunnslop has nothing going for it. It's cringeworthy and ugly throughout. "Oh look at the funny face Superman is making while getting kicked in the junk lol," and don't get me started on the terrible camera angles and messed up AI generated imagery.

People* only force themselves to like the new movie because it's the current thing. They think it's better to be served a dog turd on a platter than be served nothing, so they eat it and pretend to like it.
