Instead of gradually transitioning away from Slavery to a different and more sustainable system, they violated the Constitution and attempted to secede. Sherman should have kept going.

The Southern traitor states seceded primarily because they wanted to keep the institution of slavery. All of them stated it as a reason either in articles of secession or in speeches, ordinances, and letters.
