Anyone else notice other numbers shit besides the 2:17 thing? I saw in the classroom there was some fact sheet on the wall that had "the year 1948" on it, hen later the house Brolin goes to to look at their camera footage has the number 1948. Which was the year the state of Israel was founded...

I'm a pretty easy sell on movies. I just like going to the theater. I usually enjoy everything I see. This shit was lame. Really feel like Barbarian was way better.

This whole movie goes without anything interesting happening, it's like you know exactly what's going to happen and how it's going to end an hour before it does. I thought it was going to be way more interesting when Brolin saw the gun in the sky. It looked like it was going to be something totally unheard of.

Who is the insecure father? Brolin thought his kid was dead, anyone would express some remorse from not saying I love you more to their child in that circumstance. There’s not much commentary there. The entire movie feels like the build up to a WKUK skit and I mean that entirely as a compliment. The finale was amazing to me, and exactly what I wanted from a WKUK alumni. It was exactly what I expected and there is nothing wrong with a flashy but simple punchline of a horror movie with very obvious themes about parasitism and being a societal or familial leech.

The only bad part about the movie is that it ended with a whimper. All they had to do with give the narrator a fun line to end it with.
"Some of them eventually started to talk again too" was such a lame line to end it on.

it could have been some government experiment MKUltra shit
but it had to be a witch cause Cregger probably thinks that an old lady running from a bunch of crazy kids as the climax of the movie would be the funniest thing in the world (it was only mildly funny)
Barbarian was kinda stupid in the third act, and poorly directed (the whole predictable scene with the hobo outsite, and the climax on the watertower were just stupid and poorly done) but at least "serial killer and rapist with underground tunnels who created an incest monster" is somewhat unusual and creative
it just being a witch is too simple, and it's an issue cause the buildup of the movie and how it's structured implied some complex mystery

She mentions once that she's Alex's Aunt, the family says shes Alex's mother's Aunt, and her comment about a "touch of comsumption" dates back to the 1800s in popularity. So shes far older than she appears. She either charmed the family or has been in it for a long time, leeching off the identities of family members to stay present in it. Her not knowing how to use makeup and really loving the principal's house is throwing me off like she just wants consumption

Yeah, pretty much. Although the ending was so retarded it gave me a good chuckle, so that’s a plus.

I expected MKULTRA and I got Coraline lite instead. Yes, yes, I get it, the movie is unsubtle about the witch being both metaphorically and literally a parasite, and those people seeing kids with her hideous makeup on the kids or the junkie randomly seeing her in the forest was probably some astral projection/spiritual parasitism shit. I still wish they explained what her game plan to save herself actually was. She abducts all these children and has two whole adults at her mercy from the beginning, and then at the end she makes like she was after the teacher all along. Delaying her own escape just to kill her right. Unless she was trying to bodyjack her?

this and longlegs both have the same issue where they build a really effective mystery but then the answer is a kitschy halloween monster which feels old hat. In both cases it feels liek an attempt to elevate them and make them scary again but it kind of undercuts the film as a whole. Both have a lot of really great moments in a vacuum that keep me from saying they're outright bad, but I can't say they're what I was hoping they'd be. Feel like the movie should've opened and focused on alex from the start and then shifted to the other characters.

also feels like there's a few motifs in this flick that don't come full circle. There's the gun in the dad's nightmare that never really comes up, the 8 ball imagery thats only in the opening and closing credits, the broadcast towers that come up, and even the title itself. None of them really feel like they come together to actually mean anything.

Maybe I'm still high on the fact that I find it amazing that in this day and age it's still possible to find a movie that's not catered to ADHD zoomers or brainlet people. It's real slow in its build up, but starts to pick up speed after 40 minutes. Then it slows down again, and ends with a nailbiting final act.

It really takes a different route to the standard formula of: Getting to know the kids -> kids disappear -> parents reaction -> teacher and a parent team up and continue to find clues leading to the end. It just throws that in the trash and starts within 5 min with the disappearance having happened almost a month ago. Ballsy, but it works.

Sound design and choice of music is amazing. There are moments of pure silence, and a sick soundtrack for the 'action' oriented scenes that really fit the tone.

The movie's vibe starts to change after 2/3 in and normies might experience this as a negative thing but it's so well executed. Rather than quipping, there are moments of humor that don't change the vibe or tone at all. It's really well placed and scarcely used.

The way it was filmed definitely deserves praise. There's just something about the shots they went with. From simple things like Paul the cop getting in his car and slamming his door shut with the camera almost mounted on the door and the screen shaking as he slams it shut. The principal running in the background to his target while Gladys exits the house. Even an extremely simple chase scene of the junkie gets raised to an exciting level thanks to the work of smart camera work and backed by the soundtrack.

There's gore for sure, and gore is often used as a cheap shock tactic, but they are so scattered throughout the movie and so unexpected and meaningful. I really thought they weren't going to show Gladys getting ripped apart by the kids.

The Witch's backstory is left out, and I find this to be a good thing since it still adds a certain feel of mystery even when the movie is done. Not everything needs to be explained, and her motives for doing all this is explained well enough.

The movie isn't without flaws though. Brolin's acting is good, and the kid playing the junkie does a real good job. But not everyone is up to the same standards. Some characters like Paul received a LOT more backstory than they actually needed. The 'twist' is so easily spotted even before halfway through on the board of the classroom and again on an animal docu that's explicitely shown. The investigation of the only kid not disappearing and his parents is straight up bonkers, since any cop with a brain (and FBI was involved) would instantly spot the massive red flags with that family and their aunt who just moved in. The dad suddenly had a stroke? Convenient timing. And they never question the mom? What's their explanation there, she also happens to have had a stroke? No way that Gladys wouldn't have become suspect number one and the kid wouldn't have been removed from the house. It's about their only lead, so you would also expect them to at least frequently keep tabs on the house.

Again, maybe I'm just giving the movie more credit than it deserves simply because of the day and age it was released in. A time where you can absolutely demolish any new release if you even think of daring to go over details. But as it stands right now, I'd give it a 8.5/10. Solid from start to finish.

as much as the director denies it for whatever fucking reason it's a clear critique of parental roles over children with a deep evocation of the uvalde shooting. A cop, a parent, a principal, a teacher. Clear defined cookie cutter roles of adults who should protect children. The movie has shots of empty classrooms, bullying, upset parents, teddy bears and memorials in front of the school, and AR15s. side note: auntie gladys telling the kid "don't tell anyone, I'll know" heavily reminds me of a SA angle like perks of being a wallflower, and the kids being catatonic after being "saved"

I feel like the witch's backstory like you say really is just not necessary. I think the people who are asking for a backstory just want more of the movie itself and don't really care for the witch's backstory.

That being said, I don't think the backstory of the witch would work at all in the film. She is clearly many hundred years old (the use of the word consumption) and seems to obey some very old-timey set of supernatural "rules" - for example the salt. Not only that, but unless my memory is wrong she needed to be invited into somewhere to go in, she only entered the house once the gay guy actually invited her in.

Giving her backstory would pull the setting of the film hundreds of years back at least, which isnt necessary considering we already have her motivation.

I have a question, maybe I missed a mechanic from the witch, why did she send wong after julia gardner instead of just using her magic on her directly and order her to kill herself?
The witch sees that julia is looking around the house, so she gets in her car when julia is drunk and cuts a piece of her hair, something that, like it was shown to the kid at the table with his parents, is enough to create a 'weapon', and, like it was shown when she commanded the kids to leave their homes, she doesn't need to be near her targets to command them, so why risk sending wong? Especially when she makes such a big deal to the kid that nobody must know she's around. And then at the end of the movie, the witch weaponizes josh brolin instead of her again, only to have her fighting han solo and have some sort of payoff to their affair, I guess?

My guess is one: the magic takes a lot out her, her health is weak and it can be implied that she needs the hostages to perform the magic and stay alive, so she does everything to manipulate rather than direct magic on everyone. Second: I assume she wants to rap up investigation with the teacher being blamed and to draw as little attention as possible to herself.

But she had the perfect opportunity to stage a suicide for julia gardner as she was being blamed by everyone for the disappearance of the kids, everyone would accept without a doubt she finally had enough and killed herself, instead, the witch risked herself by showing up unannounced to wong's house where there could have been witnesses and had wong's husband killed there, to then have wong run across half of the town to get to julia gardner, it was a very lazy way for the writers to end the conflict between josh brolin and julia.

Maybe, just maybe many people enjoy both. And perhaps there is room for both. The idea that movies have to follow linear trends to try to appeal to the widest audience possible is one way bad art is made.

I was ready for a much more sinister reveal, that the witch would be eating the children to recover her strength and even look a bit younger, as it's the classic witch trope in fairy tales, and it would have made more sense for the gruesome ending, with the children doing it to her, but I guess the writers didn't want it to be that cynical and dark, showing dead eaten children.

the movie kinda tries to introduce different subplots, like han solo's wife, the police chief, the recording of the aggression on the methhead, and the bullying on the little kid, but they never go anywhere, I guess if this was a limited series of like 5 or 6 episodes instead of a movie, it would have been much more tight with those characters, while also giving more presence to the witch affecting the whole town, kinda like the It entity doing it to Derry.

This movie has a bad case of Screenwriter's Voice. None of the dialogue is natural or makes much sense. You'd think someone like Zach with some acting/performing experience wouldn't be this bad at writing dialogue. It's that classic case of someone writing stuff on paper without thinking how stiff, awkward and bad it sounds when spoken outloud.

Hair makes you a target not a weapon.
Everyone made into a target had their hair taken, everyone made into a weapon had an earthly possession.

Marcus' husband had his hair cut. Target.
Justine had her hair cut. Target.
Gladys herself had her wig cut. Target.

you'd think based on irl witchcraft and other works of fiction about this subject, being able to put a spell on someone would require an actual part of the person, like blood or hair, to make a direct contact, and not just use an object from the person, which can be shared with several people, but I guess you're right. then again, the witch could have also taken something from julia's car when she cut her hair, but I guess I'm nitpicking, it just makes more sense if the spell worked the other way around

Also everything about this movie's marketing and things like the running seemed like extremely obviously sniping and pandering to a target audience at this point in time in our culture. I'm not too mad at it but wow it's fucking amazingly over the top synthetic cash grab shit at levels never seen before. Fuck any talk about the legitimacy of the movie. Most big movies have some covert messaging, political, occult, cultural programming shit or otherwise, which this one may have too but just from the trailers it was obvious this was a cheap cash grab playing on a younger pop culture consciousness as a means of drawing in an audience. In this case a zoomer to younger millennial audience. There was a time when movies weren't so on the nose or desperate essentially to corral an audience in such a tacky way. The people that made this movie basically prioritized attention grabbing components over making an actual stellar movie. Facts.
They essentially said...
>Let's make some fuckin scary movie and put in some shit that will catch the eye of zoomers since they're the target demo. But what exactly shall we put in??? Oh I know!! Let's have the zombieish people run like Naruto motherfuckers!! So when they see the trailer they see like A ZOMBIE.. wait for it...DOING THE NARUTO RUN!!! *finger claps all around*

I don’t even like Magnolia, but the people comparing this to it are retarded. Three out of six POVs here just become horror deaths. In Magnolia, the stories all mostly had some buildup to a meaningful climax.

I wasn't as marvelled by this movie as much as others appear to have been, but I thought the character by character structure of stratified viewpoints added that tinge of pulpy small-town Stephen King-esque horror the film was practically dripping with, showing the disaffected lives of those affected by the Witch's web-like parasitic influence. The pulp-fiction style with scenes blending into one another also served to add some neat little revelations that suited the unravelling plot before Gladys is revealed, even if none of them were particularly earthshattering, like why Marcus, the Principal has been weaponised by puppet magic, and why Witch is scrawled on the car. The drawback is naturally that a more traditionally structured single viewpoint film wouldn't have spent so much time building up the relatively safe and forgettable finale of the Witch's ironic demise, which is over and done with in a flash.
