From memory...pretty much he's trying to escape hell, gets to purgatory and it's a vicious cycle of alcoholism, gambling and losers.

Broken Hill was alright besides the Noongas. Everyone is really friendly and outgoing because no one lives there too long and it's isolated without much of a population...so everyone is friends with everyone. It's fucking hot a lot of the time (40°c +). Everyone does actually fucking get really hammered quite frequently. I think the two-up hall in the film was in "Mario's Palace" (that name has changed but everyone still calls it that) which is the biggest hotel, restaurant and pub in the town all in one. Went back in 22 and it hasn't changed. Most people are miners so pretty rich
