It's a color you don't see a lot of on earth animals. That and blue, which we also see on the Andorians in early star strek and now in the Avatar films.
Maybe it's also related to the idea of a green radioactive glow, which I'd guess comes from radium which was popular for a time.

Yeah. Btw. the anon from above is correct, the green glow meme is from the early days when radiation was discovered. Radium and uranium glass did emit a green glow. A sort of radium paint was even used on clock dials and hands in the 1920s and 1930s, because you would be able to read your alarm clock in the dark. That is until some of the factory ladies who painted the dials got cancer and some of them even died.

These days radiation is much more energetic and dangerous, and that leads to a blue glow. The effect is called "Cherenkov radiation" and happens when particles generated by radiation are so energetic they traverse a medium (like reactor water) faster than the speed of light is in that medium.
