By far the best film of the year.
If the Oscars respected horror even a little bit this would win best film for it's critique on how society reacts to school shootings.
Beautifully shot. Great dialogue. Some really amazing, gruesome shots.
By far my favorite of the year. Eden being the second.
I knew when I saw the old school new line cinema intro that it was kino.
Film of the year. 10/10
Not only a great ride but a great criticism of society that doesn't get in the way of the kino
Can't wait to watch it again

I liked the slow pace it had as a result of the structure. The fact that we see some events from multiple perspectives gives the movie a lot of space. The best horror movies are compelling when you're watching the in-between bits of people talking and trying to live their lives. Those parts allow for cool stylistic flourishes and atmosphere building. Halloween is great in this respect

I was thinking about this but it worked so well. It made you think. You saw the family helping her with the large potted tree. You saw her use the branches of the tree and she didn't have to say "I USE THIS SPECIAL MAGIC TREE TO CONTROL PEOPLE WITH A RAGE SPELL BY WRAPPING THEIR PERSONAL BELONGING AROUND IT AND PRICKING MY FINGER AND COVERING IT WITH BLOOD AND SNAPPING THE BRANCH". It was pretty obvious but it still made you think. Most movies would have her spell it out or have the kid explain it to somebody else so the audience would understand.

The entire theatre laughed out loud when the dad woke from his dream and said WHAT THE FUCK!?.

The ending scene was great. Funny like something from Pirates of the Carribbean or JackAss (midgets running) but a gruesome ending that shows it all happening.

It dragged on a bit too much. I didnt care for the emotional drama. I get that you need to have it in there to create a connection with the characters but I felt lots of it could have been cut. I liked the ending well enough.

I believe they all liked do thought Vanessa was worthless and going to die on the island because of her scoliosis and Jude law was counting on that.

A point is made in the movie that the townsfolk are reluctant or avoidant and don't want to communicate. It is not a picket fences kind of small town, it's one where people are standoffish.
To that end Brolin had to be pushy to even get that other video from the ring cam to do his own investigation.
I think everyone was mostly in shock that the kids simply ran off in such a weird manner that they couldn't formulate a scenario to start investigating what's going on.

I mean realistically the feds would be all over this and in a minute they'd notice that there's a bizarre kooky lady with a braindead dad living with the only kid that didn't disappear and they'd investigate every single detail about them.
And when they searched the house they'd search it thoroughly and notice many footprints the kids left in the backyard etc etc..

But it could also be possible that the witch had some other spell cast as well that we didn't know about to deflect them.

Yeah, 17 kids running off, this would be news for months, feds would be all over it, and everyone would be checking all house cameras to see where they ran off to.

They aren't dead, so it's not like the cops search for a week and throw up their hand and say oh well we can't find them. It would be an ongoing search for many months to possibly years, as they know the kids aren't dead when they ran off.

I love how horrorfags always try to find some elevated meaning in their horroslop. My favorite one was all the fan theories about Longlegs from the title to child abuse committed by step-fathers and then the writer-director's Reddit AMA was just one big "I made up some spoopy shit it's a horror flick LMAO".

>This BBC gangbang clip starring Kagney Linn Karter is actually an unauthorized adaptation of The Camp of the Saints, with its subtle critique of mass immigration from African countries into the West and the tragic suicide of a blue-eyed blonde white girl in her prime which represents Europa killing itself

I took it as the obsession that parents would have in America of gun violence against their kids. His brain was jumping to conclusions like 'it was the teacher' ,'it was guns', etc. Whilst just saying 'what the fuck' to the actual answer because it was so nonsensical.

If we take the Stephen King inspiration/parallel then when a force of evil moves into town there is usually an opposing force trying to balance this out. Basically the townsfolk are "inspired" to act and remove the evil.
To that end both the teacher and Brolin have "prophetic dreams" that guide them to the witch, so they can eliminate her.
The gun dream can simply be a way of this "good force" to tell Brolin that he has to kill the evil person in that house and it's conveying that in a way that Brolin gets the idea that violence is necessary.

Sure that is a valid interpretation but I like my theory interpretation. The overall thing being that the elderly are just sucking the youth out of everyone and the only good ending we can have is our children destroying them.

I don't think it's about alcoholism because the main character who has a problem with alcohol doesn't really confront any of it, and in fact the alcohol doesn't really hamper her decisionsnor make her a bad teacher. She sleeps with her ex while drunk but he lied and said he was single, and it doesn't really lead to anything. The alcohol made her the prime suspect of Brolin but she's not bothered by the police by the time the movie starts or considered untrustworthy because of it.

I don't think it's about school shootings either, because the one kid who would be the stand-in for the school shooter didn't really do anything wrong before the witch showed up and threatened his parents, and in the end he kills her so I'm not really following any metaphor. "Weapons" as a title probably refers to the puppet people who can be sicced on anyone, so technically the witch is the one holding the weapon, the gun? Heh

And finally, I don't think it's about generational divide, because yeah ultimately the movie is caused by the witch using kids to get youngers (which you can take as a metaphor of the old generation robbing the youngs of their opportunities), but apart from this, there's no really any point where age groups are pitted against one another. The school staff genuinely does have the best interest of the kids at heart, and while Brolin is noticeably older than pretty much everyone he interacts with except the police chief, he doesn't throw his age around like it gives him any kind of legitimacy.

So ultimately, I think it's a movie without a message, it's about a witch using kids to get younger, in the end she dies, that's it.

I do not believe I have ever felt more at an odds within regards to a film's critical reception than with Weapons.
It's not that it's a bad film necessarily. It's just not particularly outstanding.
Its comic tendencies feel dissonant in conjunction with its ambitions for the disturbing and mysterious, with such scenes as Brolin exasperatedly smashing in the face of the stubbornly reviving drug-addict in what should have been a briskly paced finale, Garner's smug morning serenade after having seduced the cop, and Brolin cursing expletives after pouring his heart out in the dream. Levity's fine, but the film made humour a vital part of its character in a way that diluted the horror and tension.
The parasitical symbolism was foreshadowed to the extent that it felt like the Director was insecure if people would pick up on it. The AR15 felt like an amateurish grab at the absurd in an effort to seem profound. The phantasmal version of the witch haunting people's dreams is the opposite of what a parasite trying to appear harmless would do.
The plot also weirdly naïve. Why did it take Brolin's layman character to work out that all the footage of the kids had them racing forth in a straight line, and then mapping out the coordinates? Why did none of the neighbouring houses in the community query as to why the windows of the house belonging to the only non-missing kid were papered up? Why did none of his neighbours pose any questions as to the abrupt infirmity of the social and sunny parents? Why was the ritual, alchemy, and black magic of a centuries-old witch so easy for a child to imitate and channel with precise invocation?
Even the structured approach of framing it by successive characters only served to cheapen the suspense by revealing too much, and drawing out the plot to the point where it felt like the ending had to be precipitated so that the witch could be torn apart by the kids in a contrived ironic twist.
Weapons is a glorified Goosebumps episode.

One of the big links in the movie is the failure for any responsible figure in the community to actually protect these kids in any way shape or form.
The movie literally opens with the child saying the case was pushed aside and forgotten by police and authority out of embarassment for being unable to solve it.

The townsfolk readily pin Garner as a scapegoat despite no evidence and refuse to help eachother look for meaningful answers, particularly brolin's search.

The police are shown to be completely unconcerned, corrupt, nepotistic, and inept in their investigation, apparently not noticing clues such as every name except alex's being missing in the classroom and not being able to track the children's locations despite having
actual video evidence of over half the class.
The principal admonishes garner's care for her students and only acts because garner strongarms him by saying its a legal requirement to do so utterly unconcerned when off the clock.
The druggie who actually knows where the kid is repeatedly steal's children's property doesn't care at all about the children actually being there and only thinks to report seeing the children at all due to the $50,000 reward for doing so.
All this with the clearly unaffected yet disturbed relative of the only remaining child who has recently shown up after the parents "having a stroke".

It's about the decline of trust and care in modern society. People will watch a terrible inexplicable tragedy occur and will do everything to put up a show of sympathy, but will never actually do anything or take any action to correct or understand what happened. More than that, society will actively push back against and even punish people who do care and try to do something (Justine is the only one who wants to check on Alex and make sure he is okay, which would instantly lead to finding the kids, but people tell her she is wrong for doing so and even see her as a threat). A key thing about this movie is that it's very character driven, and half the time it focuses on events that are completely unrelated to the disappearance of the 17 kids, even though the characters in these events are extremely close to the case and even have the answers right in front of them but just don't care (Paul, James, Marcus, the entire police force).
