the sabers bouncing off of each other are like very strong magnets repelling exponentially more as you get them closer.
the flash of light is the concentrated light around the edges of the clashing sabers smacking together and has nothing to do with the magnetic repulsion. If the repulsion was stronger and the sabers 'bounced' off one another BEFORE the light could connect, there would be no flash but a similar feeling of swordplay.

this is why there are no extremely long lightsabers (i have only seen eps 1-8, rogue one, and played a bunch of the video games so if really long sabers exist outside of that list, i don't care)
the longer the saber, the weaker it's magnetic strength, and that's when a saber will pass through yours, fucking up it's integrity briefly and allowing them to strike you while your weapon is useless.
there is a 'sweet spot' when it comes to the length vs repulsion ability and that's where most sabers hover around.

Yeah it's a Plinkett opinion but they should've gone deeper on the mysticism. I actually like what Lucas did with the Jedi but he should have made the sith a whole different thing. He based them on Vader (corrupted knight) when they should've been more like OT Palps (evil wizard).

Just look at Maul's badass design. He should have been fighting with thaumaturgy or illusion magic, not hopping around with a double saber.

Lightsabers aren't simple weapons in the first place. To do most of what the force users do with them you need to be forcer sensitive. They obviously don't share how they're made or work. We know the internal crystals react to force powers to a certain extent. Then there's how force wielders actually battle with them be it with another force user or blocking blaster bolts - it involved precognition. Not extensive precognition some users are only seeing a second or two into the future. The stronger a force user is the better they can see what's coming next in a battle. One of the reasons saber battles look like they do is they're battles between two people that are constantly seeing their opponent's next move ahead of time. The more powerful one is able to see more and thus make a move their opponent can't but it shifts as they have to maintain focus so part of the battle is also unseen as they try to emotionally manipulate each other. This is why sith OVER emphasize emotion and why Jedi control emotion. Different paths to manipulating the outcome. A controlled mind is harder to rattle but a mind that's always been controlled and rarely subjected to intense emotions can be overwhelming by the emotional chaos a sith purposefully inflicts and radiates.

There's more to it, internal and external.

Simply put it's not as simple as swinging a lightsaber. Without the powers to let you deflect blaster bolts by seeing them coming ahead of time the saber is drastically less useful compared to a blaster or a vibro blade or detonator and so on.
