it took weeks of learning how to capture properly , deinterlace, and put it in a format that still retains quality.

sadly the first round of tapes I did I used the wrong capture methods but I had already sold off the tapes, so those will likely not make it to youtube soon

fuck using the .ts format

my encoder only captures 480p natively. YT is weird because it will force a shitty bitrate on your videos if you upload them at that size. I'd upscale to 720p with forced sidebars, just so YT handles the encoding process properly.

it will ALWAYS look like shit on yt no matter how good the source video is.

caveat: if you do upload 1080 you can use it as shill marketing for clicks by saying "UPSCALED 1080P 60FPS RTX MODE ON"

>>213585782
it really is man, going from analog to digital has so many factors. not to mention size
a 6 hour tape uncompressed is about 40+GB

my final workflow was:
VCR > DVD player with built in TBC > hauppage usblive 2 capture device > amarecTV with LAGS codec > virtualdubmod for filters > avisynthfor QTMGC deinterlacing > virtualdubmod > final MP4 output file deinterlaced to 59.97 fps, ready to stream/share

Meh, my grandad has about 1400 tapes, mostly 6 and 8 hours long each. He started to record shit in the early 80s.
He only lot a few tapes due to defective VHS players, but never to the damage of time. Hell, hi oldest tapes are the one that are the best preserved because they are quality tapes unlike the ones that were made for cheap in the 2000+
He was subscribed to movie channels all his life so he has lots of obscure little movies that never made it to dvd. He only recorded movies, no shows, no docu, just movies. He has about 5000 movies.
He's been very disappointed with the last decade of new movies.

I had this great-uncle who was pretty much a hermit in his last years of life and wouldn't talk to anyone.
When he died, we discovered he had like dozens of HDDs full of VHS footage taped off TV since the 80s.
I pretty much deleted everything to sell the drives and never found the actual tapes.

I got this recently and it was a huge upgrade for the shitty easycap clone I had.
My workflow is pretty simples, I just capture the raw video using Virtualdub, trim the video and use Staxip to deinterlace and encode to MP4.
I really have no space to keep 50GB avi files archived.

a few DVD players have a psuedo tbc circuit built in as a byproduct of the design. I found that running my VCR through the dvd player then OUT as S-VIDEO stabilized the shaky picture.
It also lets you FFD/RW on modern tv's without losing the signal

disc rot only happens if the disc is manufactured improperly to begin with. or kept in binders. otherwise they never deteriorate. i have been collecting cds since 1990 and have some of the earliest pressings from the early 80s. they all look brand new and play great. zero problems unless they were made with substandard materials
