>>213608077it can be setup as raid 0 that combines the drive space to have one big storage space, but if either disk fails, then all the data is gone
>>213606985>I just keep my desktop on 24/7 with my plex server running on itthat's better than 90% of /tv/ which just watches YIFY rips or streaming sites on their mom's laptop
>>213608132>I don't see the point of hoarding movies and TV shows because I'm unlikely to ever rewatch themyou just need enough storage to hold enough to tide you over for a few months of watching.
>>213608327I'm surprised by how little overlap there is between /g/ptg/ and /tv/
>>213608227Yeah but you can just have an external drive like that if you don't have backup. I thought backup was the main point of these systems.
RAID 0 is pointless.
For a home media server, RAID is pointless, this is coming from someone with a RAID 10.
The whole purpose of a RAID is to provide 0 downtime, which is to say if a drive fails then you can still use the media server as normal while you prepare a replacement drive, which is a function that isn't really necessary if you're not a broadcast station.
If the purpose is just to have backups, then just do JBOD.
Someone people like to do RAID because it lets you merge storage space to appear as one large pool across multiple drives, but I think this function can be simulated with other software. Also RAID can let you compound read and write speeds, though realistically your speed will be limited by multiple factors from your ethernet cable version, your router/switch, your host bus adapter speeds, your PCI adapter/mobo's SATA generation, the SATA cables, etc etc.
>>213608693raid and backups for media always seamed redundant to me, if I need to I'll just resnatch it. Backups are for more important documents
>>213608765Not everyone has access to private trackers and an infinite ratio.
Better to keep backups.

apparently you can fix the 2025 models by running some guys script on them which will add your third party drives to the device's compatibility list and you can go about your business. i wouldn't trust synology though, they might just be jewish enough to remotely brick your array in a future update if they catch you running third party drives in their machines, the way they've been going has been trending towards this.
