It wasn't a sitcom, like Malcolm in the Middle or some shit, it was a straight drama. There was even an attempt to do a crossover episode with X-Files, because the show is very close in tone and atmosphere to that.
So yeah, the audience who were viewing it understood what was going on, which I guess alleviates some of the awkwardness, since adults know this is what kids fantasize about.
What's weird is that Nintendo agreed to it. I guess any exposure (heh) is good exposure, but did they really expect to generate sales from this audience, in this context? Weird shit.
