I'd say between the Machinist and Prestige, people started to rate him highly. Pretty late into his career when you think about it.

He’d had a very successful run as a child actor in things like Empire of the Sun, Henry V and Newsies, and that continued into early adulthood with Little Women, Pocahontas, and the edgier Velvet Goldmine, but American Psycho really broadened how people looked at him and gave his credibility a big boost
