Disney screwed up here
>>213639498 (OP)>Disney screwed up hereNo, they didn't. They knew exactly what they were doing.
>>213639577They thought people would eat up that generic CGsloppa forever. Just like they thought people would eat up all of that low effort MCU and Star Wars slop forever. Time to buy out another popular IP to run into the ground, I guess.
>>213639577Actually, it was to make stuff like Chicken Little, Meet the Robinsons and Bolt. Those were their first CG projects to go into development.
>>213639652Exactly, nobody likes any of those movies. Zoomers pretend that Meet the Robinsons is an underrated movie even though it sucks
>>213639498 (OP)at least it wasn't Titan AE
>Lilo & Stitch premiered on June 21, 2002
>it grossed 145 million domestically
>Treasure Planet premiered on November 27, 2002
>it grossed 38 million domestically
>>213639498 (OP)No. Itโs a tough genre sell.
>Lightyear>John Carter>Mars Needs Moms>Treasure Planet>Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within>Titan A.E.>Strange WorldAll massive bombs. Sci-fi and kids movies are a dangerous mix. You could argue that John Carter and Final Fantasy arenโt for kids (and even Titan A.E. but it was marketed for them) but the point still stands
>>213640032john carter is a whole nother level of space pulp. not sure that could ever be a thing.
>>213639498 (OP)Disney screwed up by making a shit movie. Just about the only good thing about it was
>>213639812.
>>213640125only martin short was actually shit, maybe the little merchandise pet thing.
Titan A.E. flopped for two reasons: it isn't a very well-executed movie and it premiered 7 days before a much better animation movie with a higher Rotten Tomatoes score (RT was already a thing in 2000)
>>213639812>>213640195I need her. To this day I have things for that kind of British accent, women in uniform and a thing for femdom.
>>213639577At least they had a solid almost 20 year run before they entered the flop age of 3D, a bit longer than the 2D Disney Renaissance.
>The Little Mermaid: 84 million
>Beauty and the Beast: 145 million
>Aladdin: 217 million
>The Lion King: 312 million
>Pocahontas: 141 million
>Hunchback of Notre Dame: 100 million
>Hercules: 99 million
>Mulan: 120 million
>Tarzan: 171 million
>Emperor's New Groove: 89 million
>Atlantis: 84 million
>Lilo & Stitch: 145 million
>Treasure Planet: 38 million
>Brother Bear: 85 million
>Home on the Range: 50 million
>Princess and the Frog: 104 million
Domestic box office
>>213639498 (OP)This is my second-favorite Disney movie, and tied with Muppet Treasure Island as my favorite adaptation of Treasure Island, which is my favorite novel.
>>213639577Wouldn't have truly mattered how well it did the real reason was 2D artists were starting to unionize around that time so they wanted to ditch those types of movies and hire cheap 3D wagies instead
>>213640542Dumb move the money was on flash animators
It also wasn't very smart of Disney to release this movie 7 days before Avatar
>>213639577Disney's 2D and 3D animation departments were famously feuding with one another to secure funding at the time of its release.
>>213642680HOW CAN THE BOARD WANT ME TO CHANGE
>>213639758It's the only good movie in that trio.
