so hows this play out? ive only seen the trailer but it seems to be a history retcon where the conservative sheriff, played by phoenix, is all in favor of covid restrictions unlike the liberal mayor, played by pascal, but is there more to it than that?

Phoenix isn't in favor of the COVID restrictions, but he's not fully against them either, he just doesn't want to wear a mask because he has asthma and sympathizes with others who don't want to wear masks. Pascal is more for the restrictions and gets mad when his son goes out or when Phoenix isn't wearing a mask. Honestly the COVID stuff is a pretty small part of the overall movie.

What was this about? It felt like a little slice of life from the lockdowns era, through Ari's lense to be fair. Some of it was familiar, some I couldn't relate to and found beyond belief. I've read some online analysis after the fact to get someone's take and it seemed well thought out but it didn't nail it for me.

The one thing I didn’t get about the movie was Austin Butlers character. When he came into the movie he just droned on and then in the end he didn’t seem to have any purpose.

This movie was fucking awesome. It was so well done, it was intense, it was character driven. I loved it, honestly movie of the year. The way both sides, pro lockdown and anti lockdown, were portrayed was very nuanced. I thought Ari tackled the subject matter flawlessly, I was shocked how well he captured that time period.

Basically Phoenix is against covid hysteria because it's not lawful (he has asthma). It's a dark comedy in the fact it shows how absurd lockdown and BLM hysteria was.
>>213642663
It shows how easily society can be infected by hysteria and ideology. Covid, the white guilt shit, all that. A lot of the movie is framed through screens and phones. The smear campaign, live feeds, photo used to frame Michael, Brian being like Rittenhouse, the reveal with the wife. The AI center being a looming presence and danger kind of exemplifies that social behavior is become a simulated that somewhat cannibalizes itself, what Kaczynski coined as "oversocialization" which can be used to manipulate the population.

He's a take on grifters who rely on conspiracies for clout, that's why his whole platform is about pedophile rings and cabals. Like an Alex Jones type.

Okay sure but calling it out doesn't do shit to change it. So it's grifting in terms of exploiting emotions to profit, though it's implied Butler or at least Stone were former victims. There's a bit where Butler straight up mentions jewish number magic, he's supposed to be like one of those schizo influencers.

for my clearness, you meant to say simulation? Like in the sense that it's constructed and inherently lead to destabilization or that an "event" like covid here can be a catalyst?

Ok then I'm glad to have seen Joaquin in something new :)

The movie is too ordinary after Beau. That one was really funny and surprised situations or cinematography all the time. Eddington, on the other hand, felt like 4 hours long to me, it's not funny or interesting enough in its satire, it's fairly banal as a crime thriller and the justification for the action at the end was weird (I was hoping the whole town would go crazy and everyone would kill each other).

One thing no one seems to have picked up on: the "ANTIFA extremists" that flew into town & were fucking shit up at the end, were actually mercs hired by Solidgoldmagikarp to make sure the data farm plans would still happen smoothly. It was an allegory for how "the white man" stole the land from the indigenous, we're now big Tech is playing the part of "the white man" with normal small town American citizens being the "indigenous" all the social chaos that was sown as very much in line with the old underhanded tactics of the colonizers back in the day

He always wanted to make shit like Beau and Eddington first and foremost. These two newest films are his true creative persona.

He only made Hereditary because low budget horror was and is the only way in for new directors. Then he made Midsommar because some Swedish producers wanted to make a Wicker Man-type film about their national celebration, read Aster's script for Hereditary and hired him to make Midsommar. Aster didn't even come up with the title.
