>detective is obsessively investigating one suspicious guy
>suddenly dies/disappears while investigating that specific suspicious guy
>theyre now number one suspect for their prior crimes AND the murder of a policeman which instantly ups your (often sympathetic) case to a guaranteed death penalty

You'd never be on Columbo, the show revolves around actually smart criminals, not idiots like you who'd be caught in 5 minutes

On the art thief one, s1 ep 6, and I think this is the fastest the killer has ever realized they're fucked. 20 minutes in, Columbo has just arrived at the crime scene a few minutes ago and hes already pointing out holes in the story, identifying that there was two killers and one was wearing high heels, pointing out that the choice of art pieces stolen makes no sense, proposing a tap on his phone, and zeroing in on him specifically.

That fucking face is so perfect

There's an episode where columbo puts his head through a magician's guillotine in front of the killer and goads him into trying to kill him and he only survives because he "inverted the mechanism" basically if the guy had let the guillotine drop without actually trying to murder columbo he would have decapitated him

That episode had the perfect ending.

On your subject, I was watching the "It's all in the game" epsiode the other day (Pluto has a Columbo Channel), and he did the same thing...
> one of the murderers steps out of a party claiming a headache
> murderer tells someone else she took a pill for it and felt fine
> columbo shows up. Before he says anything he mentions he has a headache
> askes a few questions, then askes if she has any painkillers.
> is it aspirin or ibuprophin? I have a sensitive stomach
> well I'm not sure

I like the moment second before that one when the murderer offered his prepared explanation that there was the professional thief and Columbo immediately denied him.
Murderer realized that he has fucked up and it was so funny to see.

>Amateur detective Jessica Fletcher, played by Angela Lansbury, encountered a total of 274 killings in the small town in Maine, despite it having a population of just 3,500.
>This gives it an annual murder rate of 1,490 per million — more than 50 per cent higher than Honduras, where it is 910 per million.

so is columbo meant to be some kind of omniscient trickster god? unlike most detective shows there's never any doubt that he knows who did it. he just trolls the person who obviously did it relentlessly throughout each episode until they break down

Wasn't there an episode where he basically lets a mob boss almost whack the murderer unless he confessed since he couldn't find the murder weapon? Seems pretty grimey to me.

Probably the most incompetent Columbo was.

I'm not sure if we're talking about the same episode but I remember one where columbo goes
>"No mr murdered it can't be that guy who gave drugs to [main dead guy], he's been sober for a while"
>Next day
>"yeah that guy did die of overdose last night but the syringe hole was on the wrong side considering he was left handed so yeah I still don't think he's the one that gave drugs to [main dead guy]"
lmao doesn't even catch him in the act

That was the doctor one with Leonard Nimoy and his reasoning was more that the doctor was a slimey piece of shit that Columbo recognized as soon as he saw him. Columbo was outside of his office watching him while he received first news over the phone of the murder he committed and he didnt put on an act because he thought he was alone, very bad luck.
