I wonder if it is just a language barrier thing, but from my understanding the author is fluent in English and was heavily involved in the translation. There are some interesting ideas, but side by side with those interesting ideas is some of the most sophomoric dialog and the most shallow and transparent characters I have ever seen in any media ever. And that is before even delving into the stupid plot lines of each book. I honestly believe the third book is the worst novel ever written.

The latina women with pumped lips has a feature and she repeats her feature in everything she does

Only watched the Chinese version but yeah its kind of mid honestly. The early mystery aspects and Cultural Revolution connection was interesting but the video game shit was pretty corny and the whole humanity needs to be wiped out thing is a bit trite at this point.

All 3 of the books have moments that would be better suited to be in a shōnen or Japanese light novel. One scene you will have someone talking about how 80% of humanity died due to starvation and how they resorted to cannibalism to survive, and in the next scene you have sexy cyborg ninjas and femboys. There is actually a lot of cannibalism in the books. Different instances of cannibalism are central plot points in every single book. Crews on spaceships attack other spaceships so they can eat their crews, sexy cyborg ninja wants to send the entire human population to the Australian cannibalism camp, humans had to eat each other because all the food was used to build spaceships. Cannibalism was huge during the cultural revolution. Not out of necessity, but as a way of humiliating the enemy even further after death.
