Being forced to confront the fact that he wasn’t aware of what was going on inside his own house would completely shatter him. Somewhere buried deep in his subconscious he harbors a vague awareness (not even specifics, just that something’s up with Nancy and John) but everything else in his brain is working to suppress it and keep him from investigating it.
