It happened at exactly the wrong moment in time, the MeToo moment, and I think it's also because Depp had spent the past two decades as a children's entertainer, from Jack Sparrow to Willy Wonka to the Mad Hatter to whatever his Harry Potter character was. Disney want the people in their kids' flicks to be squeaky clean, at least on the surface.

Plus he's getting old and his lifestyle has taken its toll on him, robbing him of what was his main asset as an actor, his look.
