Silence was one of the most powerful religious movies I've ever seen. I'm surprised it's not more popular. I never really see it discussed here

I agree, and I also don't think their brutality was misplaced. it's kind of a cultural anachronism to say that when brutality was the norm

"their" people constantly abused the lower classes because of muh Bushido and muh blade testing. There's a reason why Christianity was popular among the peasantry

The brutality really isn't anything special for the time. The Dutch and Portuguese were doing worse in their colonies.

The Japanese correctly identified the Jesuits as a foreign spy organization.
>>213659297
Jesuits are hard to defend from a historical perspective and Christovao Ferreira is an apostate so it's probably difficult to watch a story where he actually gets to live out his life, marry a Japanese woman and die of old age for committing apostasy instead of the cope Catholic version where they say surely he was actually somehow martyred at age 70 and came back to Christ.

The matter of validity of religious belief aside, how are these types of situations not akin to becoming a prison bitch? Like yeah every day can shit on you, but being overtly bitched out like this I don't know if I see any courage or honor in it, if those words have any meaning. I think I'd choose death. And yes I say this having never been in such a situation and hoping that I never am tested in such a way.

Blades were only tested on convicted criminals. Abusing the lower classes was stupid and criminal. Samurai didn't fish and didn't farm. The lower classes did. They had value to the nation unlike the smelly priests who in reality offered nothing except servitude to the Spanish and/or Portuguese.

They believe they'll go to heaven if they get martyred and wont if they renounce their religion. It's not about courage or honor, it's what they think happens to their soul after they die. The shogunate wasn't punishing them just for being christian and didnt particularly care about someone's personal beliefs just that they were trying to use religion as a way to have influence of the population.
