This isn't a Gunn vs. Snyder thread but more just curiosity as to how box office numbers even work anymore.

>Man of Steel
>Budget is around $240mil, box office is around $670mil
>180% return on investment
>9th highest worldwide grossing movie of 2013
>Considered successful enough to greenlight several movies using MoS as their base

>Superman 2025
>Budget is around $225mil, box office is around $585mil
>160% return on investment
>7th highest worldwide grossing movie of 2025
>Being widely reported as a box office bomb

While technically the Gunn numbers are lower, I don't get how a 10% decrease is enough to go from "wide success" to "box office flop". Someone help me make sense of this.

less people see movies now.
a top movie from the 2020s will mog almost any movie from the post covid era.

meant 2010s.

the theater business never fully recovered even after COVID, most likely due to streaming.

Superman is actually more successful than MOS, the only reason Superman looks worse is because it was basically banned in several countries because of Trump, but studios make jackshit on those territories anyway. The fact it's a domestic MONSTER makes it better than it looks

Don't trust the disney spammers on this board, they're coping with THREE marvel flops and a DC movie being the top capeslop of the year. They're not honest in their coping either

Projections. Back during MoS when capeshit was the golden eggs goose, the projections said: "today's movie does X, tomorrow's will do X+100, let's green light the sequel'.
Nowadays when even normalfags are exhausted of capeslop, the projections say: "today's movie does X, tomorrow's will do X/2, let's can the sequel'.

>Superman 2025 releases on digital tomorrow
And they will never recover now. Dumbfuck studios used covid as an excuse to kill theaters in favor of their in-house streaming services instead of postponing releases, until they realized they would never get the same amount of money they were used to. Now they're doing it again because they're hopelessly retarded.

Where Covid came out and theaters were shutdown and everyone was forced to be stuck in their home, most people upgraded their home entertainment. Best Buy was running out of big screen TVs. Studios then shortened the window to streaming to 35-45 days. Unless people feel like they need the big screen experience or some event like Barbiehiemer, they will wait for shit to hit HBO Max or Disney+. Family movies are the only movies now that consistently do well.

Studios don't take 100% of box office and you aren't including marketing costs.

What the fuck is it with zoomers and numerically assessing their entertainment media?

Every time a movie or video game comes out, all of you little faggots are just looking at sales numbers, looking at user counts, looking at box office data. Who fucking cares? You're not a producer. You don't need to know. If a sequel eventually comes out, it did well enough.

It's like none of you dumb fucks can enjoy anything without some data-based consensus. Fucking brainrotted little faggots.

I don’t get it either. Long as it did well enough to get a sequel, which it is, all that matters to me

Hitting $600m was simply a better take back then. MoS came out before capeflicks routinely made a billion which affected modern projections and willingness to tie up money for three years in the wrong project. DC had to get something going at that point or cede the decade to Marvel.

You pretty much predict a movie getting a sequel just off the second weekend. If it has a strong hold, it’ll get a sequel. If it falls off a fucking cliff, it probably won’t. If it does you can bet their will be massive course redirection and overhaul. The only outlier to this is Spider Man. It has big second weekend drops only because it makes an insane amount opening weekend. Last one made 250 million weekend and dropped 68% to 90 million its second weekend. It’s second weekend is most movies opening weekend
