I always thought Karl was the only smart guy on the show and his two "friends" were a couple of fucking pricks.

As far as I could tell, what made him an "idiot" in their eyes was the fact that he isn't fucking spellbound by every piece of bullshit that's paraded in front of his face.

The other two, Ricky Gervais and glasses guy, are a couple of theater kids who love bullshit because they're both full of it themselves. They're textbook theater kids, head-over-heels in love with themselves and everything that falls out of their fucking mouths.
