The weird ghost in the shell robot kids are the "aliens" and that's the driving theme behind their characterisation, (i.e. the isolation of being terminally ill, being a weird kid, how being a robot does or does not change their insecurities)
The actual Aliens in the show need to represent something else entirely, like the disgusting and uncaring aspect of nature and how "adulthood" makes everything complicated.
You have to make the characters likeable and so the threat isn't SPOOKY MONSTER it's seeing innocent characters not suceed in their goals.
Maybe contrive a reason for the two character groups to meet that isn't fucking retarded (alien ship crashes into an isolated blacksite evil lab and alongside the aliens there's a plague that kills anything organic, robot kids need to leave)
Anyone can write this shit but they insist on weird batshit insane stuff instead.
