Smaug dying at the literal end of the 2nd movie would have been terrible. That's the kind of ending that needs closure afterwards, a drop in tension and characters arcs being resolved. But they couldn't do that because of the story structure. it makes much more sense to end on a cliffhanger, in these cases.
TH is full of retarded shit, but I swear normies and pseuds collectively lose about 30 IQ points whenever they sperg about these movies. A lot of PJ's decisions made sense, in the context of adapting the book into a prequel to LOTR

I don't really believe this. I think he wanted to revisit the good old days of making LotR. I also think PJ has a deadly lack of restraint. He always believes that more is more. I didn't watch the second or third Hobbit movies, so I can't comment on anything particular to them.
