I just watched excalibur and it was amazing, why don't they make fantasy with this aesthetic anymore?

Beautiful film but I didn't like the story one bit as it has barely anything to do with actual Arthurian Legend.

It's because of John Boorman

even his big failures like Exorcist II and Zardoz are extremely fun and unique

Good costumes are extremely expensive and live action high fantasy doesn't often do well.

It's an significant jump going from looking like cosplay to looking good. Even something like The VVitch probably spent $200k minimum on the costume department, not only making them with period accurate materials and stitching but also backups, damaged versions, people on set who can repair them, etc.
