I don't know about so much better but S2 had more duds.

Two good jokes (the old repairman with the nose and the landlord's motive) and was otherwise intentionally generic action sequences that were supposed to be entertaining because they were off-theme and overly cinematic.

The literal BPDemon concept is amusing and the fake knife was good, but the ep felt like it was missing material after she instantly kills herself and the whole thing's resolved (no, subverting expectations does not make up for bad pacing).

Bill Nye dying was good, Master Shake VA felt a bit squandered screaming for most of his lines, the recurring "too self-awaredly wholesome and affectionate" gag followed up by the speech at the end was mediocre, especially compared to Charlie going to hell in S1.
They may have been tight on time. You can tell how much more meticulous they were with the Gwimbly ep, and they stated they weren't satisfied with elements of Frowning Friends because they had to come up with it in a day (despite it being one of the better eps overall).
