I rewatched Hellraiser 1 recently. The first time Kirsty solves the puzzle box, the Cenobites don't immediately arrive. Instead, an ancient looking corridor opens up behind a wall, she begins walking down it, and then the monstrous Engineer appears and chases her, nearly capturing her. I can only surmise that Leviathan wanted to turn Kirsty into a Cenobite right away. And before that scene, whilst at the pet store, the spooky homeless guy, a servant to Leviathan, but separate from the Cenobites, is seen stalking her, keeping an eye on her, like she's of keen interest to Leviathan. Keep in mind Kirsty's not so innocent. Once the Cenobites come before her, she immediately gives up her own uncle to save her own skin. She is somewhat treacherous, and she demonstrates this once again in Hellraiser 2. So I think Leviathan wanted a Kirsty Cenobite real bad. And she'd still be real sexy, perhaps more.

The concept is interesting, but the films all contradict each other and have wild tonal shifts. First two are decent and Hellworld at least has a good plot twist.

>Hellraiser 1: blood spilled on his place of death enables Frank to escape the cenobuddies without their knowing it
>Hellraiser 2: blood spilled on Julia's place of death brings her back, but this time it's only because she was "allowed to return" so that she could ensnare Channard's soul.

In a later scene in Hellbound, Julia is about to claim Kirsty and Tiffany for Hell when Leviathan sends a mighty gale through the labyrinth, whisking Julia off to some abyss and effectively saving K & T from damnation. What's the explanation for all this? Either Leviathan wants Julia to claim souls or it doesn't. Either people can resurrect and leave without Leviathan knowing, or they are resurrected only with its permission.

Piston head!!! This movie was the mark of the downfall of the Hellraiser franchise one and two are tight two is the best one though half of the movies made after that weren't even originally supposed to be Hellraiser movies they were scrapped movies that were reworked to be Hellraiser movies so they can keep the rights to the IP.

Why did they fumble a franchise with such potential?

You should read the comics bro they continue her story it's pretty badass she does become a cinnabite matter of fact she becomes the next hell priest AKA Pinhead all to save her father the creepy homeless dude is really a demon they're not cenobites they were created to be the Watchers and carriers of the puzzle boxes in the comics theirs hundreds if of them the engineer maintains and builds the Labyrinth Leviathan is literally a machine made by the original ruler of that circle of hell but it was so strong and powerful it killed it and took over and started making the cinnabites.

Interesting. I can see Kirsty turning ceno. I can picture an alternate set of movie sequels where that happens. Like in a different Hellraiser 3, that's the cliffhanger ending that sets up the next, Kirsty becomes a cenobite. Hell Queen Succubus. You know in the first Hellraiser, and if you're not listening carefully, you'll miss it, Kirsty clearly implies that Frank her uncle molested her multiple times. Just sayin.

Not what happened at all. Pinheads accidental popularity is what completely ruined the series. Julia was suppose to be the main villain of Hellbound. But when Pinhead got so popular they changed the script, giving him a backstory. He becomes the main focus of the 3rd movie

These threads give me the impression everyone has seen the movies but not read the books.

The two books, A Hellbound Heart and its sequel, The Scarlet Gospels, are incredibly good books.

The movies are incredibly bad.

I watched the first movie (directed by the author himself) and was like "what is this pile of shit" it has none of the subtlety, beauty, depth, intelligence of the book.

The awful special effects, sound effects and decor make it look incredibly cheap.

But the books are among my favorites.

If you have any interest in this universe, do youtself a favor and read the books.

Some of his other good books include, I would say, the Books of Blood (some stories are better than others obviously) and Coldheart Canyon.

Also, the Hellraiser comics are good, for the most part.

No. It's terrible. it feels like an unrelated story that they slapped Pinhead on. It's fanfiction about him just going around punking everyone.
Hell is now just a typical fantasy world with emperors and royalty all acting pompous. I honestly kept imagining goblin kingdom from Labryrinth based on the descriptions.

the movies had a much more unique take on "hell" for a while anyway

Well we know what happens after that.
Pizza Delivery Cenobites

One newborn cenobite has a cardboard pizza box for his head with pizza slices for teeth. PIZZA GATOR.

One new cenobite has a rolling pizza slicer embedded in the middle of each of his palms. He has a Rocking Pizza Cutter weapon despite all that stuff would be left at the pizza shop. PIZZA SLICER.

Next guy BECOMES A cenobite which has razor sharp pepperoni slices and throws handfuls of molten skin searing cheese and toppings. XTRA TOPPINGS.

Next cenobite throws pizza boxes and suffocates victims with his new title. INSULATED BAG SOFTBOX.

Totally out of ideas for the 5th guy as a Pizza Cenobite. And these ideas were pretty cringe to begin with.

Tossed the last lame idea to PERPLEXITY AI.
WHICH SHOULD EXPLAIN why they just didn't murder a quintet of Pizza Delivery Guys.

Here are a few imaginative suggestions for the 5th Pizza Delivery Cenobite—aiming for the same mix of bizarre horror and pizza theme as the rest:

5th Pizza Cenobite Ideas
Stuffer Crust: His body bulges grotesquely with unnatural cheese-stuffed growths. He can rip pieces off himself to stuff into victims’ mouths, suffocating them with gooey, burning cheese. Sometimes leaks cheese like open wounds.

Anchovy Swarm: His skin is crusty and flaky, and he commands swarms of razor-toothed, flesh-eating anchovies that burst forth from his pockets or mouth, devouring anyone in seconds.

Oven Mitt: His hands have fused into giant, charred oven mitts that grip victims and roast them alive, his touch scorching-hot and leaving a smell of burning bread.

Cheese Web: Uses strings of melted, elastic cheese like a web to trap victims and slowly pull them toward him, where they’re wrapped and devoured.

Any of these would round out the team and fit the over-the-top pizza horror vibe. If you prefer something specific, let me know—I can expand on the concept!
===
Fifth Pizza Cenobite Concept

5. GREASE TRAP
Design: This Cenobite has thick, oozing rivers of pizza grease pouring constantly from his eyes and mouth. His body is slick and slippery, dripping hot oil, with mutated, bloated skin covered in burns and shiny glistening patches. Wherever he walks, he leaves a burning trail that melts flesh.

Weapon/Ability:

Grease Blast: Can shoot scalding streams of pizza oil from his hands, causing excruciating chemical burns.

Slippery Grasp: Victims struggle to escape his grasp due to his slippery, greasy surface, making him ideal for grappling.

Grease Trap: Can cause puddles of burning, animated grease that crawl after victims, engulfing and dissolving them.

Catchphrase/Gimmick: “Extra flavor, no escape.”

A Hellbound Heart is good and it’s more or less exactly like the first movie.

The Scarlet Gospels is less than great because the most interesting aspect of the book is the idea of Pinhead attempting a coup in hell, only for the actual execution being a totally lacklustre because Pinhead basically kills everyone in power with a magical nuke and then spends rest of the book basically walking to meet Lucifer. And then it all ends in a dumb slug fest.

The Harry D’Amore parts also become increasingly boring after entering hell and the whole witness was cooler sounding on paper than how it actually plays out. It could make for a fun movie but you would need a decent enough budget for it and also change the story so that instead of Harry D’Amore and co. chasing Pinhead it’s more of a traditional quest story. Only instead of willing participants all seeking a trophy Pinhead has basically enslaved bunch of magicians who’ve fucked with the box to be sacrificial lambs that help him go through the cathedral (like each one has to die to solve a puzzle gate or whatever) and Harry accidentally bumbles into it as Pinhead is acquiring his final expedition member and it inspires Pinhead to enslave Harry to be his witness to his ascendancy when he gets to Lucifer. And then you can have the traditional last act where it’s anticlimactic until Lucifer wakes up and Pinhead realises his quest has been a sham and then everything falls apart as they fight with Harry making it out only because he’s meant to spread the word of what’s happened. Maybe with the sequel bait that Pinhead reigns Hell now and he’s got plans or whatever.

The first movie was the best
The story was great and there was still a whole lot to explore
So it would only be natural to add several chapters and follow up movies after the first one but how they fucked it up that bad is beyond understanding

At the time of the first movie I would place it on the same level of Poltergeist and The Omen
The exorcist was leading the horror scene

I remember reading Clive Barker in my right hand with a thesaurus in my left hand. The experience was scintillating and invigorating.

Clive Barker's Books of Blood is a consistently good short story collection, often better than his cenobite stuff.

Kristy becoming a cenobite is depressing and contrary to the theme of the original novel. It's also predictable fan service. Not everyone gets corrupted.

Kirsty is a different character in the novel. She's an awkward geek who orbits a married man, admiring from afar but never getting that longer-for fuck. She seems like she may be a virgin.

Kirsty in the film is a very hot young woman and she knows it. She has taken possession of her sexuality and she might even be into some kinky shit. She's more credible as a possible cenobite.

Clive really tied pushing Harry D’Amore too much. he takes over from Pinhead in the comics too. Clive just didn't want to face that nobody else gave a shit about D’Amore

Maybe to OP's point the movies benefit from having someone who has escaped or been summoned from hell. A duplicitous manipulative evil plotting against the protagonist, pushing events forward for their own personal gains.

I really would like a Harry D'Amour tv series with a long running subplot of the Box and Hellraiser.

The recent remake was the worst. Ugly cenobite design, awful blue filter, ugly ass shit characters, no female torture scenes because woke, and pointless side characters. Stupid get-out-hell-free card with the lament configuration.

But, there a few good moments: the entry scene of the cenobites and the car chase scene where they show their dimension intersecting with the normal world.

Contemporary writers/directors can't handle Hellraiser because it is an inherently chud film. It's about how indulging in desire eventually drags you down into hell. Unsurprisingly it was written by a likely HIV positive gay man in the 80s.
