The Ice Age scenes fundamentally undermine the aesthetic and internal logic of Alien.
The whole Alien franchise runs on “cassette futurism", a version of the future as imagined from the 1970s. That’s why you’ve got chunky CRT monitors, keyboards the size of dinner trays, clunky industrial design. It’s not “realistic,” it’s an aesthetic choice rooted in how people in 1979 thought the future might look.
But if characters in this universe are watching Ice Age, then that means our post-70s culture actually happened. Which implies the world’s tech and culture evolved like ours IRL… so why are they still using magnetic tapes and retro terminals in the 2100s? Why would Weyland-Yutani have ancient-looking CRTs when flat-screens and sleek UI design would already exist?
The Alien vibe only works if you treat it as a divergent timeline that froze in the amber of late-70s futurism. By dropping a 2012 movie in there, they’ve basically said “nah, this is just our world with xenomorphs slapped on top.” And that completely kills the atmosphere for me.
