Why was Ghostbusters such a massive hit among children even though it was made for more of an adult audience

It's got zap zaps, a cool car, Slimer, scary dog things and the theme tune.

It's a classic example of a "high concept" premise and therefore very intuitively easy for children to understand (hence the cartoon). The equipment, ghost-monsters etc lent themselves very easily to various kid's toys. The original Star Wars film had very similar merchandising (and tech/characters easily converted into toys), the specific iteration of which was actually fairly new and innovative at the time (kenner action figures, weapon-toys, models etc).

partially the theme song and partially that Columbia merchandised it out the ass prior to coming out
there's a reason this is straight up the most iconic logo from a movie ever, even divorced from context it's cool as shit

● Ghostbusters has a cartoon made shortly after. Yes, the cartoon was aimed for a child audience.
● The movie was more action/comedy. Kids love action/comedy.
● The practical effects were dang good, it had several puppet creatures, the guns fired lightning bolts and caused things to explode while being nuclear. Kids love fantastic stuff.

Despite what ad execs think, kids don't just like safe, colorful nice shit. As a kid, I was intrigued by aspects of the adult world. Ghostbusters might have been the first movie I ever saw, and it scared me senseless when I first watched it. My mother really questioned if I should be allowed to watch it. But it became my favorite movie.

I was thinking about this and this probably the only part that wold actually scare kids
slimer was funny
Stay Puff was cute
gozer was hot
the dogs were kind of scary but they just kind of run around and aren't made to give the audience a jump scare

Which one was in charge of linking the movie to the cartoon series?
