It captured the whole "Le nihilistic with wacky quips" mood of the mid 2010s that captivated Millenials like with Ricky and Morty. Just like with that show that sthick got really old and Zoomers look at it as cringey

I'm 34. I remember the occasional nerd at a house party telling me to watch this. I think I watched the first episode. I chuckled at the "Penguin House" publisher being an actual penguin, then never watched it again. The 2010s was dominated by fucking retards thinking their sadness/depression was an interesting personality trait and shows like this just made it worse. I don't know what Gen Z's big shows are (if any exist), but the Millennial angst shows were ass.

There is a reason adult swim the premiere adult animation place for 20 years advertised entirely to college age dropout stoners and highshcoolers while targeting preteens who'd watch Cartoon Network until it transitioned.

Because it has always been, and always been since for manchildren losers. All of it, which is the stigma that Bojack and any of the rest have to go against.

It's a pretty red pilled show that people think is reddit. It's more a good watch than burst out laughing show. Some of the visual gags were up there with early Simpsons era. I will say the later seasons asexual stuff with Todd did my fucking head in but he was a fairly retarded character most of the time anyway. The fact a lot of people here love King of the Hill and shit on Bojack Horseman is dumb as fuck id recommend Bojack to almost anyone certainly over that timesink KOTH

agreed 100%. the animal shtick gave it the levity it needed. but people will latch onto any reason to dismiss a show they don't want to watch.

I really liked Bojack, my only criticism is that it maybe went on a little too long and lost its momentum. it probably could have been wrapped up after 3 or 4 seasons. but it's a minor criticism, it mostly managed to maintain its quality even if it started getting a little stale.
also as anon above said, it had its definitive ending and left me satisfied to walk away from it. not everything needs to be discussed in perpetuity. especially something like Bojack which has a clear message that you take away and move on with. it would diminish it if it stuck around forever like the Simpsons or something, or kept getting dragged out of the closest like Futurama. I liked the show, but I don't need any more. I got what I needed out of it.

I recall sitting with an old friend of mine talking about tv shows we'd recently watched and I brought up Bojack Horseman. My friend immediately went off on a tangent about how sick he was of "Will Arnett is a sad alcoholic!" shows that had been cropping up at the time. Honestly I think there were only two. Maybe three. But it was too many for him.

I legitimately don't understand how anyone can enjoy this show. It's just not funny, at best it's funny if you're a stupid stoner who never grew up and then the actual contents of the serious story isn't anything special and that's just season 1, from what I understand it just gets worse and worse and they never let the character develop.

Yet they did the same thing to Tony S. in his final season (in that Melphi finally concludes he is an irredeemable monster who is beyond all help) and that show is still beloved, with a bunch of middle aged frumps thinking he's an antihero of sorts, so I dunno. People are fickle.

The later seasons were around the time when the writers lost their minds and started hating on the audience for not hating bojack to the same level they did. They had literal episodes where they more or less just shouted at the audience about how evil and unlikeable bojack is and how you're just stupid and lack le heckin media literacy for not thinking the way they do.
It's the same problem with other shows like R&M where the show stops being about the characters and their little adventures and becomes more about the show itself in this weird meta way where they poke fun at the genre and also start talking to the audience about the characters but in a way that is still contextual in the show so it's not outright breaking the 4th wall like Deadpool or a Mel Brooks movie
