>>213776463 (OP) You thought it was annoying to have to read captions for dialogue and captions for the gook runes that kept appearing on screen every time they cut to a new location or a new character. So you stopped reading the gook rune captions.

>>213776746 Because the only point of this was for Anno to flex and make a statement about government beauracracy. Don't get me wrong, it respected Godzilla and did his legacy justice, but it didn't have the trapping to be an international hit like Minus One
>>213778271 YEAH! That one main song that they kept playing over and over again. I'm sitting there like this is EVA music! It's just the drums though. I kept waiting for the rest of the instruments to join in
>>213778389 What you didn't expect was for half the film to be a satire on beauracracy and government incompetence in the face of natural disasters. But the movies been out for a while now so it's kinda on you for not knowing that
Was this really people's take away? It felt like the Japanese government in the movie acted pretty realistically and admirably if something like that really happened. Yes Japan likes meetings and faxing reports but they logically go through all the steps a government should take in response to a gigantic nuclear lizard. My take away was optimistic about institutions facing a great adversity not >le government bad
>>213778442 Yeah I went in blind. Didn't want to read up on it, just wanted to see it because it's Godzilla. Godzilla shooting the energy beams out of his back was pretty cool though.

>>213778558 it had a dry but very satirical view of government process. constantly moving from one meeting to another and basically just carrying on the same conversation in a different room, etc.
>>213778582 It got more hilarious each time it happened. It was clearly the government leaders stalling making actual decisions out of anxiety, all the while people are dying and the city is getting leveled.
You can only say this if you weren't paying attention at all. Yes the first like 20 minutes they are scrambling to set up some sort of task force and chain of command to respond to a crisis with absolutely zero precedent (also figuring out wtf kind of crisis this is in the first place) and yes it's a funny sequence of the officials moving from meeting room to meeting room, but after the first attack the special task force is immediately established and that leads to gojira being defeated by the end.
Also I love that france helps save the day by blocking the americans and others who want to nuke toyko on the UN security council (I can think of many other times in international relations france dissented from the isre- American position)
>>213778683 I disagree. It was a prevailing theme through the whole thing, the japs only got their shit together in the last minute cause the movie had to be wrapped up. I think it was a realistic portrayal of how long it would take for an effective response to disaster to happen, and I don't think other governments would do much better, but japanese autism on display is always a treat

I'm convinced the reaction to how bad Satomi Ishihara's english completely stopped her from trying to speak english in public and film/shows ever again
>>213778827 I actually thought that was some kind of other meta commentary regarding Japanese tradition and culture when I watched it. No that doesn't make much logical sense but it was the only reason I could understand having an international diplomat with such bad pronunciation/engrish

>>213779247 It's probably more because he's american. Anything less than the room being on fire and everybody being surrounded by piles of dead bodies doesn't register as a problem to them.
>>213779406 Criticizing the japanese government is fine, and Shin Godzilla does that. Americans' just can't into subtlety, in media or in real life, so in their mind a 'satire' of an incompetent government means it's staffed by bumbling fat morons like homer simpson/peter griffin characters, and not actual real life problems.
>>213779475 Kamen felt super bloated to a non-fan but, like the others, it's a total love letter to the fans. Ultraman balanced this much, much better though.

It was great up to the big battle scene. I wish more battle scenes played out how they did it. Showing the vehicles and weapons with giant captions on what they are was a nice touch. The government satire after the battle just wasn’t the same. The heckin science battle was good liked all the teamwork and humanity jazz. One more battle would’ve been nice but at least it’s open to a sequel. And for zoomers that don’t understand the government satire, this movie was made soon after the Fukushima disaster.
