This wasn't that bad, just violent whiplash from featuring noobs after a whole career of exclusively working with some of the biggest/best names in acting. Seems like something he wanted to get out of his system, or was pressured to make for his acquaintances. If his next movie is on the same level though it's probably over.

Phantom Thread, the Master and Inherent Vice are all kino. All directors are liable to put out a stinker

this was his first movie I didn't really like. so I don't know, it could have just been a fluke. if his upcoming movie is also a dud, then yeah, he might be on his way out. I have to say it's not looking that great from the trailers, but who knows, it could surprise me. I like to think that he still has a few good movies in him though. he's only 55, there are directors still working in their 80s. it's normal to go through creative ebbs and flows, very few artists are consistently great throughout their whole careers. even if he puts out a handful of mediocre films he could still make a comeback.

Licorice Pizza was pure kino. Inherent Vice was an unfunny schizo mess

It's so long between features I sometimes forget what he has made. Phantom Thread and Licorice Pizza are the only two in the last 10 years. LP has some solid moments, but it was just okay.
I am more pumped about One Battle After Another each time I see the preview. Leo and Benecio gives it the potential to be elite.

What is this poster even trying to convey? The film is about what? A girl with no bra and pizza?
