there are no actual people who hate it, don't get confused. there were some column writers/reviewers who were paid to kill it, and there are beings who act out a human character, on reddit and such, maybe even irl, who believe that acting like they hate it is 'something that a person does'

everyone is using gas powered engines for everything. Thereโ€™s a problem with that. Who is drilling for oil, and processing it into gas? Gasoline has, at best, a shelf life of about six months, and thatโ€™s when itโ€™s been kept in the best of conditions.

They speak of refineries and appear to have a large amount of crude oil in the tanker.

The main problem I had was with the main female protagonist who was a dumb bitch who fucked up my boys boat on multiple occasions. Apart from that I liked it, especially the ending where he couldn't handle being on dry land. It's one of those movies where at the end I fantasised about taking over the protagonist and imagined becoming a dirt trading.

I'd say its more famous for flopping on a massive budget than being the worst film. its watchable and has a couple of decent moments, along with some crappy ones. it's aggressively average and not worth hating.

I love Waterworld. I was a kid when it came out on pay-per-view. My dad was supposed to watch me and my brothers for the day, but he had customers that were supposed to be coming and going all day while my mom was at work. (Drug dealer) So first thing in the morning he went to rent it on PPV but accidentally chose the all day pass(probably already high), which meant you could watch it as many times as you want in a 24 hour span. He forced us to watch it over and over all day because it cost more and he thought he'd get his money's worth that way. Best thing he ever did for us.

I'm guessing those a pretty rare and expensive to get in Waterworld. However people could be growing tobacco, drying it, cutting it, and rolling it something similar to rolling paper. Made from seaweed or some other type of shit. People are very creative.

This. ((Journalists)) poisoned the well before the film ever came out to the extent that plebs are still convinced it's a flop despite it opening at #1, being top 10 at the box office that year and eventually turning a profit. It didn't make as much as it should have because of its budget problems but the fact that it made its money back and then some despite the insane costs just validates that people liked it.

I'm old enough that my friends and I got loaded and went to see it in theaters and everyone had a blast. It's a fun movie

This. I think it was because Costner decided to become a producer and make movies without the blessing of the big studios. This probably pissed off a lot of big wigs in Hollywood, especially since he's not Jewish.

I think the issue is it was released at a time when there were a million Mad Max spinoffs being released and people were getting fatigued with the whole concept. This movie was getting tonnes of attention in the press at the time for being over-budget and being a massive vanity project of Kevin Costner's and that definitely influenced peoples' perceptions of the movie.
Not to mention the commercial edit of the film sounds like garbage, I've only ever watched the extended one and it sounds like a lot of the comfy worldbuliding stuff that really helps make the concept interesting was cut.
All that said, it really is a bit of an average film, maybe above average. I don't think it's that great, and they were stupid to throw so much money at it.
