Why didn’t they just parachute in behind the Germans?

I’m aware that the airborne already did that but why didn’t they just wait a day or two and THEN try the beach landing? Seems like a crappy plan..

They did, but to establish a long term campaign they needed the beaches as a landing point. The paratroopers harassed supply lines and artillary positions to make that easier but to take the beach they needed to attack it with a TON of shit which meant boats. You can only get so many paratroopers behind enemy lines.
